Welcome to the VCSU Art Department
Valley City State University is fast becoming the school of choice for ambitious art students throughout the region. The Department of Art provides students with the technical skill and cultural awareness essential to the careers of professional artists, scholars, teachers or administrators. Our students expect to be challenged, to try new materials, strategies and ideas. VCSU Art students have access to excellent facilities and close mentoring from faculty. Coursework includes practice, discussion and critiques with faculty, advisors and visiting artists. Cross discipline investigations are strongly encouraged. Exhibition and installation spaces are readily available throughout the beautiful community of Valley City. Fargo and Moorhead, with their rich history in the visual arts, are just a short drive away.
The VCSU Art Gallery is a teaching space available for student presentations, visiting artist exhibitions and local shows. Seminars on specialized topics, and a strong visiting artist schedule can be seen in the gallery.
The VCSU art faculty instructs all levels of drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, design, and art education. The Art Department Offers a B.A and a B.S in Studio Arts a B.S in Art Education (teaching art in K-12 classroom) and a Digital Design certificate in arts-related businesses and industry such as graphic design and commercial art.
Excellent opportunities are available for studio training for artists and preparation for a variety of careers such as commercial art, computer graphics, or gallery work. Well-equipped studio space is available to all students, and personal studio space is available for upper level students. Ceramics and printmaking facilities are high–quality, and a student art gallery is run by and for the students. The Department of Art also makes an important contribution to the cultural environment of the campus and community
