Major and Minor Degree ProgramsFor students interested in careers in Education, the department offers major degree programs in English and Spanish, plus several minor degree programs in English, Library Media & Information Science, Spanish, Speech, Teaching English Language Learners, and Theatre. Majors in Communication Arts are also valuable to students pursuing careers outside education. Students who major in English and Spanish develop outstanding communication skills that make them excellent candidates for many roles in the corporate world or graduate studies. The Professional Communication program is ideal for careers such as journalism, marketing, or public relations in which communication plays a pivotal role. Fulfillment of General Education RequirementsNearly every VCSU student takes at least one class from the department in order to fulfill General Education requirements. Several courses, particularly those in Communication, English, Spanish and Theatre, are offered by the department that fulfill 'Ability' requirements in:
These are areas in which developed skills play a vital role in the success of our graduates. Opportunities to Study AbroadVCSU enjoys 'sister university' relationships with two universities in Mexico. These agreements provide for student exchanges that enable study abroad for VCSU students, and add cultural diversity to the VCSU campus. Study in Mexico is required for all students wishing to major in Spanish. Contributions to Campus LifeEach year, four theatrical productions give students an opportunity to participate in this rewarding activity and provide the entire community with opportunities for cultural enrichment. VCSU offers outstanding facilities for these productions including Vangstad Auditorium, a historic facility with a capacity of about 850, and Theatre 320, a contemporary "black box" theatre with historic and elegant features. What in the World is Going On is a series of provocative discussions on films, books, speakers or current issues that are organized by members of the department in conjunction with community members.
