Why should I be interested in an ESL Endorsement?

Teaching English Language Learners Minor

OUR COMMUNITIES AND SCHOOLS ARE BECOMING MORE CULTURALLY DIVERSE
ABCNews.com (August 3, 1998) reports:
  • Nearly 20 percent of all children in the nation's schools are immigrants or the American-born children of immigrants.
  • More than 2 million children nationwide are identified as limited English proficient students--children who need additional language skills to succeed in English-only classrooms.
More regionally, the Fargo Forum (Dec. 1998) reports that
  • In the 1984-85 school year, there were 73 refugee and non-English speaking students in Fargo schools.
  • By 1993-94, that number had shot up to 581, an increase of almost 700% in less than a decade
  • It began rising again two years ago, hitting 583 students this year--an all time record.
