La Paz

Valley City State University
and
Universidad Autonoma de Baja California Sur

In our global economy, a knowledge of the Spanish
language and culture will enhance almost any major.

THE AGREEMENT

In June of 1994, Valley City State University signed a sister university agreement with the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) in La Paz, Mexico.

Now, each year a number of VCSU students study in La Paz and UABCS students come to Valley City. There has also been exchange visits of faculty and administrators.

THE PURPOSE

It is the aim of VCSU to provide every student with an international experience, help each student to be a good global citizen and to be able to participate in a global economy. The agreement with UABCS is an important first step.

UABCS

The University was established in 1975 on an attractive campus on the southern edge of the city. It offers programs in marine science, social sciences, agricultural sciences and computer science. The marine biology program attracts student from all over the world. UABCS offers the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish for foreigners.

LA PAZ, BCS

La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, is located on the Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez). The Baja peninsula is 750 miles long and La Paz is approximately 1,000 miles south of San Diego. It is a peaceful city on a beautiful bay where locals and visitors enjoy beautiful sunsets, crystal clear waters and unspoiled islands.
With the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement, Mexico and the US are more commercially closer than ever before. Now, knowing Spanish means business.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT EXCHANGE

One of the main purposes of the sister university agreement is to promote student and faculty exchanges. Students, from both universities, who have changed campuses for a semester or for a year, have found the experience to be both educationally enriching and personally enjoyable.

For VCSU students wishing to study at UABCS, money should not be a factor. A semester there will actually be less expensive than a semester here, even with air far included.

Study at UABCS would normally be during the junior or senior years and after the student has a sufficient command of Spanish. It is therefore important to begin Spanish study early in one's college carrier. At UABCS there are opportunities for continued language study.
