We are excited to be hosting the NDSTA Spring Conference at Valley City State University, and have a great lineup of speakers and sessions.
 

Guest Speakers are:

Julie Olson
Featured Speaker, NGSS Writing Team and a Science Teacher in Mitchell SD

How are the Next Generation Science Standards different from the old standards? Why do we need new science standards when the focus is towards Common Core? How can K-12 teachers prepare for the NGSS?

Join Julie to discover what you can do to prepare yourself for the new standards, and receive activities to implement into your classroom now! Julie will be hosting sessions for elementary and high school teachers to learn about the implementation of the NGSS.


Sam Shaw
Science Specialist, Division of Learning and Instruction, South Dakota Department of Education

Sam has served as the South Dakota State Science Education Specialist for over three years. His role as a specialist within the Department of Education allows him to stay informed and consult with parties involved in research and initiatives in K-20 science education.
His current operations include advising state and national grants, implementing statewide professional development and laying a foundation for a STEM network. Sam also led South Dakota’s Next Generation Science Standards work as a lead state.


Sam Stier
Director of Public Education and Conservation with The Biomimicry Institute

Sam works with educators from schools, musea, aquaria, zoos, environmental centers; as well as media on inspiring and educating the next generation of people about biomimicry. He also assists corporations and inventors conserve nature’s growth.

Before TBI, Sam worked as wildlife field biologist in the Philippines; biodiversity conservation consultant for The Nature Conservancy, World Bank, Conservation International, and World Wildlife Fund, and Fellow with the National Science Foundation as science curricula developer.

  • Thursday evening social will be held at the Presidents House.
  • Friday morning opening ceremony will be conducted at the Foss Music Building.
  • Friday and Saturday sessions and exhibitors will be held in the Rhoades Science Building.
