The heating plant is a furnace fired by coal (usually from North Dakota) that provides heat
for every building on campus by heating water into steam and distributing it through a network of
underground pipes. During the winter months, the path of the pipes is sometimes revealed by warming
the ground around them enough to melt the snow on the surface. During the peak winter months, the
heating plant can go through a full train-car load of coal every day. The plant has been kept up-to-date
with modern pollution control, safety and coal handling equipment.
