VCSU Ranked #2 Public Regional College in Midwest

Valley City State University earned the #2 spot among the Top Public Regional Colleges in the Midwest in the 2011 edition of America's Best Colleges by U.S. News Media Group. This marks the 13th year in a row that VCSU been recognized by U.S.News, and the second year in a row it has been in the #2 position. VCSU is once again the highest ranked public college in North Dakota or Minnesota in this category.

Valley City State University Professor David Melgaard was named the Outstanding Career & Technical Educator by the North Dakota Association for Career and Technical Education (NDACTE). Melgaard, who is also the University's Career and Technical Education Coordinator, is being honored at the NDACTE Annual Professional Development Conference held in Bismarck August 9 – 11.

The VCSU Music Hall of Fame Banquet will be held on September 18th at the Valley City Town & Country Club. The event has become a popular means of recognizing outstanding alumni and past faculty. This year two individuals will be honored: Ward Thomas Stine received a B.S. in Music Education from Valley City State University (VCSU) in 1965 and is being honored posthumously. Dr. Loren R. Waa was the band director at VCSU from 1964 to 1970 and will attend the Hall of Fame Banquet. All VCSU alumni and friends of the university are invited to attend this special event to honor these exceptional men. A social hour will begin at 6:00 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. The evening will include reminiscences about their days at VCSU as well as the exceptional contributions they have both made to music during their careers.

The awards recognize the academic achievement of these students and provide significant financial support as they pursue M.S. and/or Ph.D. degrees in science, engineering, and mathematics at UND and NDSU.

Heidi Kirsch, Sonja Plautz, and Kelsey Wilhelm, all senior music education majors at Valley City State University, were recently given national recognition from the National Association for Music Education (MENC). The three were awarded the Professional Achievement recognition certificate for their "commitment and dedication to MENC and music education. This recognition is given to Collegiate members who have served their chapters in an exemplary manner."

VCSU reported final Headcount for the 2010 Spring semester increased 7.8% over last year's figure to 1,034, marking the largest Spring semester enrollment since 1990. This follows VCSU's announcement the beginning of Fall 2009 semester of a Headcount increase of 6.3%, which was the largest Headcount for Fall semester in nine years.

Minnesota State University – Moorhead (MSUM), North Dakota State University (NDSU) and Valley City State University (VCSU) have entered into a partnership to improve teacher training and effectiveness that the Bush Foundation, subject to conditions, has committed to support with payments of up to $5.65 million over 10 years. VCSU announced availability of a new concentration in English Language Learners (ELL) for the university's online Master of Education program. The concentration meets the additional educational requirements of teachers in North Dakota and across the nation that must comply with No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements for students with limited proficiency in English. The program will also help meet the increasing demand for graduate credentials for career and salary advancement.
