Peters Named to Lead Valley City State Athletic Department

Valley City, ND – Valley City State University President Dr. Ellen Chaffee is pleased to announce that Doug Peters has been named the Athletic Director for the Vikings. Peters will begin his duties on July 1 and will replace Don Bauer, who is retiring after serving as the VCSU athletic director for nine years.

Mark Becker, Petroleum Specialist with Dakota Plains Corporation, said, “With this propane tracking program, we can do a much more professional job of managing our propane business, which will save our company money."

The City of Valley City, ND agreed to invest $150,000 in the Technology Teacher Education Online degree program now being offered by Valley City State University. The investment is expected to fund the operation of the degree program through a transition year into a period of aggressive growth and expansion. The program is the nation’s first and only online undergraduate program in Technology Education, and is the first program created to address the new national standards of International Technology Education Association.

Dr. Richard R. and Ardis L. McCready of Sun City West, Arizona, announce the establishment of the McCready Scholars Endowment at Valley City State University. The endowment will provide scholarships for outstanding students. Each McCready Scholar will receive full funding for tuition, fees, books, supplies, room and board. The scholarship will be re-awarded annually for a maximum of four years of support to Scholars who maintain a 3.5 grade point average or above and make yearly progress toward their degree. Students in any academic discipline may qualify as McCready Scholars.

I have met only one person who did not know Isabel McLaren. Now he knows her, too. I’ve known her for 30 years, myself. She was my daughter’s kindergarten teacher in Fargo, and she was perfect for it. She is not a whole lot bigger than the kids, just as energetic, even more eager, and ever so much fun. Two generations of children seem to have charged her batteries for the two decades since she retired, and then some. Those years and her inimitable style endear her to hundreds of kids and families throughout the region and beyond.

A dedication ceremony is planned for the V-12 Memorial for Saturday, June 28 on the Valley City State University campus. An ice cream social will take place from 2 to 4 pm with the dedication taking place at 3 pm. All activities will take place in the Memorial Student Center. Karla Aaland will deliver the 2003 Commencement address at Valley City State University. Karla is former president of Loegering Manufacturing in Casselton, which makes construction equipment. During Karla’s tenure with Loegering she held several positions within the company and the company received several awards including the the 2002 International Integrity Award and 2001 Fargo Moorhead Small Business of the Year Award.

Legislators included a major state-funded building project for Valley City State University in the 2003 higher education budget bill. The bill authorizes and funds VCSU to build an addition to Graichen Gym. The bill also authorizes the university to seek revenue bonds to renovate a residence hall during the coming biennium.

Michael M. Miller, bibliographer and creator of the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection, established in 1978 at the North Dakota State Universities Libraries, Fargo, is donating to Valley City State University's Allen Memorial Library a special collection of learning resources about the Germans from Russia who settled in North Dakota, the Central and Northern Plains, and the western Canadian prairie provinces. The learning resources contain information about their life, history, culture, folkways, and foodways in North Dakota, the Northern Plains, and South Russia (today near the Black Sea, Odessa, Ukraine).
