SB: Vikings Receive Team and Individual Academic Honors

The Valley City State University Viking Softball team has been recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association with the Girls Got Game Top 10 Academic Team award for their work in the classroom in the 2008-2009 academic school year. The Vikings were the number five team in the nation with an overall team grade point average of 3.457.

Final fall enrollment figures at Valley City State University (VCSU) showed total headcount increased from 1,019 in 2008 to 1,083 this year, an increase of 6.3%. Undergraduate headcount of 961 was a 6.8% increase from 2008, while graduate headcount of 122 was a slight increase over 2008. VCSU also has 6.7% more students living in campus residence halls compared to a year ago.

Valley City State University earned the #2 spot among the Top Public Baccalaureate Colleges in the Midwest in the 2010 edition of America's Best Colleges by U.S. News Media Group. This marks the 12th year in a row that VCSU has been included in the U.S. News 'Best Colleges' rankings, and is an improvement over its #4 ranking last year. VCSU is the highest ranked college in North Dakota or Minnesota in this category.
Music Hall of Fame Banquet Rescheduled to September 19

Due to the early closing of the VCSU campus last semester, the Music Hall of Fame Recognition Banquet, originally scheduled for May 9, has been rescheduled for September 19 at the Valley City Town & Country Club. The banquet will honor two outstanding VCSU music alumni: Josephine Wright Rhoades (in memoriam, Class of 1917) and Carole Paulson Flatau (Class of 1960). All VCSU alumni and friends of the university are invited to attend this special event to honor these exceptional women. A social hour will begin at 6:00 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. The evening will be filled with memories and stories, celebrating the service of these distinguished individuals to Valley City State University and the musical culture of North Dakota and beyond.
Dr. Dahlberg to Continue Serving as Interim VPAA

After conducting a nationwide search, Dr. Steve Shirley, president of Valley City State University (VCSU), announced that Dr. Margaret Dahlberg will continue to serve in her role as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs for at least the next six months. Dr. Dahlberg has been serving in this role since the resignation of Dr. Joe Bessie became effective in April. Dr. Shirley plans to reassess the situation after fall semester and determine whether to make the assignment permanent or to re-open a search.
WBCA Recognizes Women's Basketball for Academic Success

The Valley City State University women's basketball team ranked 5th on the 2009 Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA's) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the highest ranking of any public university in the NAIA, with a team grade point average (GPA) of 3.61. This is the second consecutive year VCSU's women's basketball team has been recognized on this list, and represents an improvement from the team's 11th place position in 2008. The team was separated from the NAIA top GPA of Dana College (NE) by only .153, and is the only women's basketball team in the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) to make the national academic ranking in 2009.

Valley City State University announced that the Inauguration of Dr. Steven Shirley has been rescheduled for 3:00 pm, Friday, September 11, 2009 in Vangstad Auditorium. The event, originally scheduled for April 3, was postponed due to difficulties related to spring floods. Dr. Shirley began his role as president July 1, 2008, replacing Dr. Ellen Chaffee who retired after 15 years of exemplary service.

Enkhtuya Battulga, a Sophomore from Mongolia, and Fakira Soumaila, originally from Niger, were interviewed about their reasons for selecting VCSU and their experience so far. In advancing its strategic efforts to partner with North Dakota businesses, this new alliance will help prepare VCSU graduates with real-world job skills. This move allows VCSU to incorporate SAP software into its curriculum and interact with dozens of organizations nationwide that use SAP software to drive business operations.

Science faculty from VCSU took time out of their summer schedules to respond to a request from VCSU alum Ryan Hanson '92. Hanson is now the principal at Devils Lake High School and was looking for a way to beef-up the curriculum in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics -- the so-called STEM fields. "With the ever-changing world we are in, it is absolutely imperative to prepare our kids for the future,' said Hanson. 'The best way to do that is to make sure our teachers are well prepared."

The Museum of Science's National Center for Technological Literacy (NCTL) and VCSU have completed a Memorandum of Understanding to bring quality standards-based engineering and technology education to K-12 schools throughout the United States. The goal is to improve the technological literacy of K-12 teachers nationwide and prepare qualified teachers to address the national shortage of technology educators.
