WBB: Vikings Draw College of the Ozarks in National Tourney
The Valley City State University Vikings will face the #3 nationally ranked College of the Ozarks (Point Lookout, MO) in the opening round of the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament in Sioux City, IA.
AASL recognizes VCSU's graduate LIT concentration
The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) division of the American Library Association (ALA) has recognized the Library and Information Technologies Concentration of VCSU's online Master of Education program as a quality school librarianship program. VCSU is the only university in a four-state region (MN, ND, SD and Montana) with a nationally recognized program of this type.
Spring semester enrollment sets new record
Valley City State University reported final Headcount of 1,306 students for Spring semester 2012, an increase of 7% over last year's figure. This marks the fifth consecutive Spring semester of enrollment growth and represents the largest Spring semester enrollment since the University moved to a three semester academic year in the Summer of 1992.
VCSU's online M.Ed. gets national ranking by U.S.News
Valley City State University's online Master of Education program earned national rankings in U.S.News & World Report's first-ever edition of Top Online Education Programs. Appearing in the category "Graduate Programs – Education," VCSU's is the only program offered by a North Dakota college or university to be ranked in this category.
Top 10 news items for 2011
2011 was in many ways a truly historic year for Valley City State University, with several strategic initiatives paying significant dividends for students, alumni, and the State of North Dakota. Here are a few of the highlights:
Doug Dawes joins VCSU as VP Business Affairs
Valley City State University named Douglas Dawes to the position of vice president of Business Affairs. Dawes brings a background that combines higher education and private industry experience in finance, operations, capital budgets, human resources, information systems, facilities management, and project management.
Ken Frenette named cross-country, track head coach
Valley City State University announced that Ken Frenette has joined VCSU Viking athletics as head coach for the men's and women's cross-country and track & field teams. Frenette joins the Viking staff with over 23 years experience as head men's and women's cross country coach at NCAA Division I Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC.
Dr. Shirley Named to "40 Under 40" List
Prairie Business magazine selected VCSU president Dr. Steve Shirley to be included in the magazine's "40 Under 40" feature in their December issue.
Students Helping Soldiers
This holiday season, students in VCSU's COMM 114, Human Communication, are conducting a service learning project and they need YOUR help. The class is collecting items to send for overseas troops through Books for Soldiers. Items being collected include books, international phone calling cards, DVDs and care items/ toiletries. Any funds that are collected will be used to pay for the cost of shipping the items. You can find drop off locations at area businesses in Valley City as well as in McFarland 204 on the VCSU campus.

VCSU named a Champions of Character Five Star Institution
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has again selected Valley City State University as an NAIA Champions of Character 5 Star Institution for 2011-12. VCSU, which has been a Champion of Character institution every year since 2002-03, this year received the highest score in the state and the second highest score in the 16-member Association of Independent Institutions.
VCSU Reports All-Time Record Enrollment
Valley City State University set an all-time record for final Fall semester enrollment by achieving a headcount of 1,384 students, surpassing last year's final headcount of 1,285 by 7.7% and the previous record of 1,369 set over 40 years ago. With this accomplishment, enrollment at VCSU has grown by 40.1% over the past four years.
USNews Ranks VCSU #1 Public Regional College in the Midwest
VCSU earned the #1 spot among the Top Public Regional Colleges in the Midwest in the 2012 edition of America's Best Colleges by U.S. News Media Group. This marks the 14th year in a row that VCSU has been recognized by U.S.News.
President Shirley Selected for Fargo South High Hall of Fame
Dr. Steve Shirley, president of Valley City State University, is being inducted into the Fargo South High School Hall of Fame. Individuals selected for this honor must have brought special recognition to themselves or the school by demonstrating high qualities of character and leadership, or have given meritorious service to the school.
Dr. Shirley Elected to NAIA Council of Presidents
Dr. Steve Shirley, president of Valley City State University, has been elected to serve on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Council of Presidents. His term will begin immediately and conclude December 31, 2014.
First Day Enrollment Reports Show Continued Growth
Valley City State University today announced first day total headcount of 1,312 students, a 10.3% increase over 2010 first day headcount of 1,190. First day new student headcount at VCSU is 324, a 5.2% increase over last year.
VCSU Receives Grant to Enhance Information Literacy
Valley City State University has received a three year, $232,029 grant from the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program, administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, to develop, implement, and disseminate projects that will develop school library media programs, integrate them across the curriculum, and enhance collaboration among library media specialists, classroom teachers, and school administrators.
Theatre season kicks-off with Little Shop of Horrors
VCSU Theatre will kick off their 2011-2012 Season with their annual 24 Hour Theatre in late August, followed by the hit musical Little Shop of Horrors in October. The season will continue with Life in the Fat Lane in February and close in April with a Student Film Festival, screening student-produced films from around the country.
VCSU's Football Field Named
The football field at Valley City State University, which is in the midst of receiving a new artificial turf surface, is being named Shelly Ellig Field in recognition of a major contribution from the Fargo-area businessman and philanthropist.
Vikings Honored for Scholastic Achievement, Character
Known for competitiveness on the playing field, a flurry of recent announcements recognized several Viking athletes and coaches for other wide-ranging accomplishments and honors. Viking football captain Trent Kosel, head coach of the women's basketball team Jill DeVries, DAC faculty representative Dave Bass, and the entire Viking program all received recognition. |
