Hagen Nominated for Wimba Hall of Fame
Dr. Sara Hagen has been nominated to the Wimba, Inc. inaugural Hall of Fame for Excellence in Collaboration. The ceremony will take place in Orlando, Fl, at the Wimba Connect 2010: Magic of Collaboration Conference March 21-24.

Hagen won a "Wimba Wow!" state award last fall, along with colleague, James Boe. Hagen teaches the only undergraduate music theory sequence using "live" classroom technologies in the United States. Online students are "live" in videoconference, chat or audio conversation simultaneously with campus students in the classroom using the Wimba collaborative software suite. Dr. Hagen uses a variety of digital tools including a webcam, a digital writing tablet, slide shows and music graphics to replace the chalkboard in her teaching. All students can interact with her and the materials in "real time," creating a lively learning environment for all. The Department of Music uses this technology to deliver a number of music courses, including history, pedagogy, music fundamentals and aural skills. A music business seminar and basic conducting course will be added in the fall of 2010.

Hagen serves as the Director of Music Technology for the department and completed a certificate in Distance Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison as part of her preparation for teaching these courses.

Tour of China Seminar March 24

The North Dakota Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a free informational seminar on March 24, from 10:00 to 11:30 am at the Valley City Town and Country Club for those interested in learning more about their November 2010 Tour of China.

The ND Chamber is partnering with Citslinc International, Inc. a well known tour group that has taken more than 15,000 tourists to China each year for the past 28 years, to host a nine-day trip to China. The trip includes stops at the Great Wall, Temple of Heaven, and Tian An Men Square; as well as famous businesses including the Suzhou Silk Factory, Cloisonné Factory, and the Hangzhou Dragon Well Tea Farm.

This all-inclusive trip is currently available at the early bird rate of $1,899 per person, based on double occupancy, until June 1. This price includes round-trip airfare from Los Angeles Airport, four and five-star hotel accommodations, deluxe tour buses, English-speaking tour guides, and all meals and attractions.

"This is an exceptional value for a trip of this caliber," says Dave MacIver, President of the North Dakota Chamber of Commerce. "Participants will visit memorable sites and also learn about some of the country's top businesses." After June 1, the price of the trip will increase to $1,999 per person.

This seminar will cover the trip itinerary, visa application, passports, and participants' questions. Seating is limited and registration is required at 800-382-1405 or www.ndchamber.com. Additional tour information and trip registration are available by contacting the Chamber at 800-382-1405 or visiting www.ndchamber.com.

The North Dakota Chamber of Commerce is the state's most influential general business organization. It offers many programs and services to help businesses succeed in North Dakota and to make the state an outstanding place to live, work and do business.

VCSU Music Students Receive National Award

Heidi Kirsch, Sonja Plautz, and Kelsey Wilhelm, all senior music education majors at Valley City State University, were recently given national recognition from the National Association for Music Education (MENC). The three were awarded the Professional Achievement recognition certificate for their "commitment and dedication to MENC and music education. This recognition is given to Collegiate members who have served their chapters in an exemplary manner."

All three have served as officers in the VCSU Collegiate chapter of MENC, and have distinguished themselves through service to the VCSU campus, the Valley City community, and the field of music education.

The VCSU MENC chapter promotes the field of music education through service and professional development activities, and provides its members with meaningful learning and service opportunities. Membership is open to any enrolled VCSU student with a strong interest in music education.
