VCSU Scholarship Auction

VCSU Scholarship Auction
by Dr. Steve Shirley, VCSU President

The following article will appear in the Valley City Times Record this Week.

On Friday, April 23, Valley City State University and the VCSU Foundation will host the annual Scholarship Auction. This will be the 16th annual event, and it is a great way to support the students of VCSU. This auction is the single largest event held throughout the year with the specific intent of raising scholarship dollars for VCSU students. We are hoping to have in excess of 400 people in attendance this year, and it would be fantastic to have YOU at the auction!

The theme of this year's auction is VCS-Uau ..... as in, come on out and enjoy a Hawaiian Luau atmosphere at the VCS-Uau. What better way to celebrate the end of a long winter than with a Luau! All of the proceeds from the scholarship auction go directly toward funding VCSU student scholarships. The proceeds from the auction are split equally between the V-500 program in support of academic scholarships, and the Century Club program in support of our student-athletes. Students at VCSU depend on the scholarships provided through these two important programs to assist them attain their educational goals. On behalf of our students and everyone at VCSU, we are so appreciative of all the auction attendees who turn out to support this great cause.

The Auction begins with a social hour at 5 pm on Friday, April 23 at the Eagles Club, and will last into the evening with a meal as well as silent and live auctions and other assorted games. It certainly is a fun evening with so many unique items available for bidding. Thanks to all of our supporters and the local and regional business community who donate items for the auction. Tickets for the event are $35 each (or two for $60) which includes your meal and a beverage. New this year is that everyone who purchases a ticket will be entered into a drawing for one of three major raffle prizes including: an Arctic Cat 50 CC scooter (sponsored by Dacotah Bank); a $500 Leever's gift card (sponsored by Leever's); and a power washer (sponsored by NAPA). Thanks so much to these donors for supplying raffle prizes, and thanks to all of the many businesses and individuals who donate time, talent, dollars, and auction items to make this event such a success.

Of course, none of the success for this event is possible without a large turnout of attendees. Again, we are aiming for a goal of 400 tickets sold for the big event! Please contact the VCSU Foundation at 845-7203 or any member of the V-500 or Century Club boards to purchase a ticket. Even if you cannot attend the auction on April 23, you will still be entered into the drawing for one of the three raffle prizes.

You are guaranteed to have a great time at the auction and will be supporting a terrific cause! Thank you for your ongoing support of the students of Valley City State.

DeLorme & Students Present at American Fisheries Society

Dr. Andre DeLorme and two of his students presented talks at the Dakota Chapter of the American Fisheries Society in Spearfish, South Dakota on Feb 23 – 25. The title of Dr. DeLorme's talk was "The Prairie Water Education and Research Center" and focused on the new environmental learning center he will be opening this summer.

The students, Junior Adam Bommersbach and Senior Jake Mertes, gave talks that related to their summer research in the VCSU macroinvertebrate lab that focused on mussel populations in North Dakota rivers. Their research was funded by a State Wildlife Grant to the VCSU Macroinvertebrate lab and Dr. DeLorme. The title of Adam's talk was "Comparisons of the Mussel Pyganodon granids From Three Different Water Bodies in North Dakota." Jake's talk was titled "Population Dynamics of Unionid Mussels in the Sheyenne River." Jake also won the Kreil Scholarship which is given to an outstanding student presenting from North Dakota. They gave their talks in a session that was mainly professional and graduate level talks. The quality of their presentations was illustrated by the moderator of the session commenting to the audience, after Jake had finished his talk, that "Dr. DeLorme should be congratulated for having two excellent undergraduate students giving presentations."

A third student, Terry Velasquez, also had a poster presented at the meeting. Terry worked this past summer with Dr. Brian Graeb from South Dakota State University and the title of his poster was "Identification of the Different Crayfish Species and their Distribution in Western North Dakota."

Information Session on China Tour

The North Dakota Chamber of Commerce is hosting an informational seminar on the upcoming tour of China. This seminar is free and open to the public. The agenda of the seminar will include the trip itinerary, visa applications, and questions from the audience.

James Attends Library Technology Conference

James Attends Library Technology Conference
Donna James, library director, attended the third annual Library Technology Conference held at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN over the Spring break to gain knowledge of emerging technologies being used in both K-12 and university libraries. The keynote speaker was WebJunction's Michael Porter (LibraryMan) who encouraged the attendees to think about libraries as Content + Community in the context of for-profit information providers like Netflix, Roku, Apple TV, and new other technologies. He said that libraries' strength was in its librarians who have a reputation as a trusted, caring information-providers and that libraries need to think about how to form alliances with for-profit information providers.

Donna attended breakout sessions about university digital commons, using Google apps and other web-based collaborative applications, best practices for making distance-education information resource tutorials, and ebook management. "The conference was a real eye-opener," said Donna. "The VCSU library has some definite technology challenges ahead. I hope that one of the first things the library can do is provide leadership in establishing and organizing a digital commons for VCSU as so many other university libraries have already done."
