12th Man Club online auction underway

The 12th Man Club is holding an online auction to raise funds for Viking Football. The online auction will be open for bids at 8:00 am on Monday, February 13 thru noon Friday, March 3.

This is a great way to help support Viking Football by raising scholarship money. You have the opportunity to purchase some awesome items donated by our football alumni and friends of Viking Football. Without their support this auction would not be possible.

The Athletic Department and coaches hope the competitive juices will start flowing and that you will out bid your friends for the item(s) you want! Remember this is a FUNDRAISER and we are hoping that you will over bid on all items.

The online auction can be found at: http://alumni.vcsu.edu/givingopp/vp.htm?p=213 or by going to the VCSU Football webpage: http://vikings.vcsu.edu/football/ and clicking on the "Online Auction" banner. Please forward to your family and friends!

ETF meeting February 16

A meeting of the Environmental Task Force has been scheduled for February 16 at 2:00 pm in the Student Center Skoal Room. The Task Force became part of the VCSU campus through the current Strategic Plan.

Membership to this task force is open to anyone interested in promoting environmental friendly practices on VCSU campus.

The main agenda topic for the meeting will be planning for Earth Day Activities in April. Come to the meeting and bring your ideas and friends!

ITI MiniGrant Call for Proposals

Here's your opportunity to put new, innovative ideas to work! The IT Innovation (ITI) Mini-Grant program seeks applications for up to $1500 awards for innovative ideas directly tied to instruction at VCSU.

For more information see the website: http://www.vcsu.edu/develop/
Look on the left menu for ITI Mini-Grant. Applications are available on that page and are due by NOON on Tuesday, February 21. Please put "ITI minigrant" in the subject line. Questions? Contact Sara Hagen.

LIT Master's Concentration receives national recognition

The Library and Information Technologies (LIT) graduate concentration at Valley City State University has received notice of national recognition by NCATE-AASL as an approved school library education program!

VCSU's graduate library program has been listed on two national websites, AASL at http://www.ala.org/aasl/aasleducation/schoollibrary/ncateaaslreviewed and NCATE at http://www.ncate.org/tabid/178/Default.aspx?ch=106&CO_ID=11135&state=nd.

Under the direction of Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Margaret Dahlberg, Donna James and Mike Mack (an outside consultant for the LIT program) prepared the application and gathered three years of student data to support it. This is the highest accreditation recognition possible for a program of this type to receive.

Hoff attends AAPT Conference

Hoff attends AAPT Conference
Valley City State University Associate Professor Don Hoff attended the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) annual conference February 4-7, 2012 in Ontario, CA as the section representative for North Dakota.

Hoff represented ND at the section officers meeting, the section representatives meeting, and the AAPT council meeting. Updates and or decisions were made concerning: 1) review and recommendations of the developing new national science standards, 2) science/physics instruction and teacher preparation at K-12, 2 year college, and university levels, 3) The Physics Teacher magazine, 4) AAPT budget, and 5) future meeting sites and dates.

AAPT members were informed of how they could participate in the science standards review and development at the state and local level, and were encouraged to do so.

IDea Corner

Do you require your students to use Web 2.0 tools, such as Blogger, Wikis, Wordle, Google Docs, etc? Do students send you assignments and you provide feedback via e-mail? Do students e-mail you asking about their grades, finances, other other secure information? Do you send that information back to them via e-mail?

Please plan on attending an important discussion with VCSU IT security officer CJ Kotta and NDUS security officer Dick Jacobson concerning email and Internet practices and student security and privacy will be the topic of the Brown Bag this Wednesday. The NDUS policies may affect the way you currently use these tools.

The agenda is as follows:
1) Review NDUS policy and suggested methods for achieving compliance at VCSU.
2) Discuss where is the NDUS policy headed.
3) Address questions and discuss situations where the suggested methods may not be practical, desired, or efficient.

Where: Norway and President's room, Student Center
When: Wednesday, February 15, 12:00-12:50 pm and addition conversation for those interested in staying until 2:00

For JUST $5, you can get a boxed lunch with a sandwich, chips, salad/veggie, fruit, and beverage. RSVP by Tuesday 11:00 am to Shannon VanHorn.

The review of the online checklist is pretty much complete. Thank you everyone for your timely attention in this process. We have learned a lot in the process and have some ideas about how to do the review in the future. I would like you input on the process. Please use the discussion board or email me directly with any thoughts that you have.
