Hagen attends ACDA

Hagen attends ACDA
Valley City State University Associate Professor Dr. Sara Hagen attended the north central regional conference of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) in Madison, Wisconsin February 8-11.

Conference highlights include choral concerts, interest sessions, honor choir rehearsals and concerts, music reading clinics and exhibitor booths including publishers to tour providers. Hagen attended interest sessions "The Bridge to Somewhere: Using Performance Repertoire as a Vehicle to Develop Music Reading Skills" with Angela Broeker and "Building Literacy and Musicianship Skills Into the Choral Rehearsal: Tonal Activities" with Carol Krueger. Both sessions focused on the ability to move from sound to ear to symbol using performance repertoire as the musical foundation.

Musical literacy is defined as teaching students independence with regards to reading, interpreting, and performing music with accuracy. Research is continually providing insights into the ways in which children learn to read music. While it is similar to reading text from left to right, students must also read up and down and be able to audiate (hear internally) those tones before they attempt to perform them, making sight-reading music a real challenge! Hagen's area of research is sight-playing at the piano, which also explores the ability to plan the physical motions of performance in advance as well as reading left to right, up and down, and audiating.

Hagen's current research, in collaboration with Dr. Alejandro Cremaschi (University of Colorado-Boulder) and Dr. Cynthia Stephens Himonides (Institute of Education, University of London), "Effects of Extended Practice with Computerized Eye Guides for Sight-Reading in Collegiate-Level Class Piano" is in submission for publication with the Journal of Music, Technology and Education in the U.K.

Tech Ed Faculty attend Curriculum Leadership Institute

Valley City State University Assistant Professor Gary Ketterling, Assistant Professor Roger Skophammer and Instructor Peder Gjovik recently attended a Technology Engineering Environmental Mathematics and Science (TEEMS) workshop at the Virginia Tech University STEM Education Collaboratory. By completing the workshop, participants began the process to become certified as Engineering by Design Elementary Teacher Effectiveness Coaches (EbD-TECsTM) to provide training in the TEEMS curriculum.

The curriculum was developed for Grades 3-5 by the STEM Center for Teaching and Learning, under the auspices of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA). The curriculum is based on the Standards for Technological Literacy (technology and engineering), the National Science Education Standards, and the Common Core Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts. The curriculum utilizes a building block approach specific to grade level. Over the next year, additional "Building Blocks" will be developed for Grades K-2. The curriculum is integrative and material content is linked to the Grand Challenges for Engineering.
