Owen presents at MN gifted & talented conference

Owen presents at MN gifted & talented conference
Valley City State University Instructor Jackie Owen recently presented at the annual conference of the Minnesota Educators of Gifted and Talented. Her conference presentation, "I Can Icon, You Can Too!" offered a practical approach to using icons for depth and complexity (Kaplan, 1986) as graphic organizers to increase critical and creative thinking across the curriculum.

This year's convention focused on STEM and its connections with literacy, critical thinking, creative thinking, inquiry, and the use of technology in teaching gifted students. Highlights of conference sessions attended by Owen included a review of iPad apps for classroom use, and a session on teaching students to create effective video presentations. Owen also spent time networking with Minnesota educators, many of whom commented that the emphasis on differentiated instruction in all education courses and the inclusion of a module on gifted and talented education in the Exceptional Students class at VCSU is "more than undergraduate education students learn about gifted students at other schools."

Other universities were represented as vendors at the conference. Next year, Owen would like to have VCSU's undergraduate, graduate, and STEM programs represented, as interest in program was strong. The conference is held every year at Cragun's Resort near Brainerd, MN.
