van Gijssel attends national conference

van Gijssel attends national conference
Valley City State University Associate Professor Dr. Hilde van Gijssel attended the 43rd annual meeting of the Environmental Mutagen Society (EMS) in Bellevue Washington.

During the conference, Dr. van Gijssel learned about the newest developments in genetic toxicology research and judged a poster and platform presentation for student and new investigators. She chaired the committee meeting for the Education, Student and New Investigators Affairs committee and delivered a presentation about career development at the Students and New Investigator Brunch.

van Gijssel currently serves at the EMS Council (the major governing board of this organization) and participated in two council meetings. She also met several individuals that may provide opportunities for students to be involved in cancer research and learned about a new opportunity for collaboration with Dr. Delorme at the Prairie Water Education and Research Center.

VanHorn Presents at CSTAND Conference

VanHorn Presents at CSTAND Conference
Valley City State University Associate Professor Dr. Shannon VanHorn attended and presented at the Communication, Speech, and Theatre Association of North Dakota's Conference Sept. 13-15 in Mandan, ND.

VanHorn participated in two panels, "Incivility in the Classroom and What We Can Do About It" and "Service Learning form the Student Perspective." She also responded to the top undergraduate submissions to the conference. She attended several sessions, and had interesting conversations with high school teachers on what is expected of their students when they go to a college or university. For example, many schools are required to accept late work with no penalty up until the end of the quarter.

VanHorn is on the Executive Board of CSTAND and is the editor of the Journal of the Communication, Speech, and Theatre Association of North Dakota.

Viking tennis club in action last weekend

Viking tennis club in action last weekend
Results from Viking Club Tennis at the University of Wisconsin Superior Yellowjackets tournament on Saturday, September 22.

VCSU takes 1st place overall going 2-1 on the weekend and finished with the highest games won total of 66. Play saw outstanding performances from Senior and team captain Katie Paulson and Sophomore Kurt Brown who both went undefeated in all three singles rounds and combined only gave up 10 total games across seven sets.

Freshman Alex Conlon went 2-1 on the day in the mixed doubles rounds, teaming with Senior Eryn Lutjens for two of those matches and Katie Paulson for the final match of the day which scaled the win over NDSU.

Freshman Austin Ross and Josh Bartels teamed for the men's doubles matches all day and struggled to get wins but played well and showed they will be a great addition to the Viking Club team!

Coach Erik Kringlie indicated this was a great way to start the season and gives the club team 60 points towards the fall series standings which determine seeding for the USTA Sectional Championship in February. Up next for the club team will be its home tournament on October 6, then back on the road for back-to-back weekends at Carleton College and UW Stout.

Round by Round Results:

Round 1:
VCSU – 23
UWS #1 – 21

Round 2:
VCSU – 19
UWS #2 – 21

Round 3:

Campus Recycling

As we get settled into daily routines, please remember to RECYCLE whenever possible. VCSU continues to add recycling receptacles across campus to make the effort as easy as possible.

You can also help by reminding students and co-workers to recycle whenever possible- whether it be throwing recyclables in the right receptacles or reusing a sheet of paper- every little bit helps!

If your office or classroom could use a recycle bin, contact Facilities Services at 37710.

Thank you ...

VCSU Friends,
Thank you so much for everything during the past month. Thank you for the flowers, phone calls, thoughts, and prayers. It is truly appreciated and certainly helped through the past weeks.

Each day is better – although awfully slow. I need patience.

I miss seeing you all and hopefully will be back ASAP. Thanks again!!!

Marcia Pritchert
