Graduate school information presentations scheduled at NDSU

The NDSU Graduate School is sponsoring a series of presentations about attending graduate school in conjunction with the Research Methods Conference on Friday, March 1. Information sessions are scheduled and attendees will also see graduate student research projects that are currently underway at NDSU.

The graduate school information presentations will take place from 9:45 am to 2:30 pm in the NDSU Memorial Union Room of Nations. The schedule is listed below.

How to write a statement of purpose
9:45-10:45
Most graduate and professional schools require prospective students to write a statement of purpose or personal statement. Come to this workshop to learn more and gather information to write your own.

Is graduate school right for me?
11-12:15
Even if you're not considering NDSU for graduate school, this presentation will provide more about why people earn advanced degrees and what it might mean for you and your future.

12:30-1:30 – lunch break

Graduate Student Panel – Question and answer session for prospective students
1:30-2:30
Do you have questions about graduate school? Current NDSU students will offer advice and tips for prospective students. Come with questions!

For more information contact Marcia Foss, Director of Career Services, McFarland Hall 209, or call 845-7534.

James attends National ALA Midwinter Conference

James attends National ALA Midwinter Conference
Donna James, library director and project director for two Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grants awarded to Valley City State University, recently returned from IMLS-directed travel to the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Conference in Seattle, WA. Donna attended the conference to learn more about the recently released 2010 ALA/American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Standards for the Initial Preparation of School Librarians and the review process. Valley City State University's M.Ed./Library and Information Technologies concentration received AASL/NCATE recognition in 2012 under the 2003 standards and continues to gather data which will be used to seek AASL/NCATE recognition under the new standards.

While attending the conference, Donna had the opportunity to hear Caroline Kennedy speak about the importance of libraries as places of self-discovery. Kennedy, the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, will be serving as the Honorary Chair of National Library Week in April of 2013.

The annual ALA Midwinter Conference is also the venue for honoring top youth authors and illustrators, so the Newbery and Caldecott Medal Awards for 2012 were announced on January 28 at the conference. Allen Memorial Library's Curriculum Collection contains all of the Caldecott and Newbery award-winning titles since the inception of the awards nearly fifty years ago. This year's winning titles, "This is Not My Hat" and "The One and Only Ivan" will be added to the collection immediately.

Adams selected to chair National Intercollegiate Band

Adams selected to chair National Intercollegiate Band
Valley City State University Assistant Professor James Adams was recently named the chair of the National Small-College Intercollegiate Band, which will rehearse and perform at the 2015 College Band Director's National Association national conference.

Dr. Adams has been serving for the past three years on the National Task Force for Small College/Community College issues, and is enthused to be involved with the organization in this new capacity. He began his duties in January 2013 and will continue through the conference in 2015.

Volunteers needed

The North Dakota Winter Show is seeking volunteers to take tickets at various events March 5 - 10. Anyone interested in volunteering should please contact Nikki Grebel at 845-8789 or nikki.grebel@usbank.com as soon as possible.
