Alumni Association Renovates Social Media

Alumni Association Renovates Social Media
The Valley City State Alumni Association has given their Facebook page a "facelift." Three new projects have been initiated to increase social media involvement and Alumni participation. The three projects are being handled by VCSU Senior, Dillan Ostrom, who is doing an internship in the Foundation office. He will be overseeing each of the new additions and will be assisting with the 19th Annual Scholarship Auction. Since the launching of these projects this month the Facebook page has increased its number of likes and activity to the page.

The Facebook additions include:

Pet of the Month - The VCSU Alumni Office is promoting the contest to boost their interaction with VCSU Alumni (and their pets). They are encouraging alumni to submit pictures of their pets to the Facebook page from the 1st-28th of each month on the VCSU Alumni Facebook page (preferably with VCSU memorabilia included in the photo). Favorite pet picture will be announced and the pet will get a special treat.

Walkthrough Wednesday - Walkthrough Wednesday was created to provide VCSU Alumni virtual tours of the new facilities on campus. It will be featured once a month and will showcase the improvements throughout VCSU. Walkthrough Wednesday provides the opportunity to stay connected with YOUR University and experience Valley City State University's progression!

Q.O.T.W (Question of the Week) - Each week a question will be posted and prizes will be given away. The questions will vary depending on the week and will generally involve Valley City State University. The first question of the week featured "Your Love Story." The Alumni Association asked individuals that met their significant other at VCSU to submit the story behind their love.

VCSU student interns at Costa Baja Resort & Spa in La Paz

VCSU student interns at Costa Baja Resort & Spa in La Paz
Alaskan native and VCSU student Garrett Jackson has spent the last two and a half months in Mexico's beautiful peninsula Baja California Sur, in the remote city of La Paz, where he has been studying Spanish and interning at one of La Paz's fine resorts located next to the fine-sand beaches. Also located in La Paz is VCSU's sister university, UABCS, which has a longstanding tradition of exchanging students to provide academic opportunities and increase global perspectives.

Garrett Jackson is a senior this year majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Management, and a minor in Spanish. The duration of Garrett's time spent in La Paz, MX, will total six months, as he began his journey back in November 2012. While abroad, Garrett is working with management in various parts of the five-star hotel during his internship, which was inspired by his interest for working in tourism. The opportunity to improve his Spanish has been ideal in his position, as he is working directly with people both in the professional environment, and with his host family and friends. "My Spanish has vastly improved since I came to La Paz," Garrett replies when asked about the challenges of learning a second language, "Being in La Paz forced me to learn the language. My family that I live with doesn't speak English apart from one of their sons that is my age. Also in my internship I speak only Spanish with my coworkers. When I first got here I couldn't understand very much and could hardly hold a conversation. Now I understand just about everything and am able to communicate effectively."
