Stickler to host comet watch Thursday

Professor Joe Stickler, science department chair, will host a comet watch for Comet PANSTARRS at 8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 14, at the Rosebud Visitors Center parking lot.

Beginning March 12 the comet should be visible near the waxing crescent moon; look toward the western horizon after sunset. Binoculars will aid in locating the comet. For more information on the comet, visit http://earthsky.org/space/comet-panstarrs.

Stickler was interviewed Thursday, March 7, about the comet by Prairie Public radio's Skip Wood and featured in an article by Brian Gehring of the Bismarck Tribune at http://bismarcktribune.com/news/local/comet-should-be-visible-on-western-horizon/article_74562694-8831-11e2-bf1f-001a4bcf887a.html.

DeLorme to speak on mussels at BCHS lecture series

Professor Andre DeLorme will speak on "Freshwater Mussels in the Midwest" at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 21, at the Barnes County Museum as part of season 15 of the Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series. The lecture is open to the public free of charge.

Delorme will address types and distributions, historical records, life history, past economic uses, and the overall health and future outlook of North Dakota mussels.

An aquatic biologist, DeLorme did a three-year survey of mussels in North Dakota rivers for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. He runs the VCSU macroinvertebrate lab and directs the Prairie Waters Education and Research Center.

Concordia to host National Book Awards March 21-22

Concordia College in Moorhead will host the National Book Awards on Campus March 21-22. Visiting authors are Louise Erdrich, the National Book Award winner for fiction, and Domingo Martinez, a National Book Award finalist for nonfiction.

The event will include master classes and presentations, including a Readings and Conversations event with the authors, hosted by National Public Radio's Neal Conan, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in the Centrum, Knutson Campus Center, on the Concordia campus.

The event is free and open to the public. Contact Rob Walsh to organize a ride share if interested in attending.

Maher attends Professional Learning Communities conference

Maher attends Professional Learning Communities conference
Elizabeth Maher, instructor in the School of Education and Graduate Studies, attended a Professional Learning Communities conference hosted by Solution Tree in Phoenix, Ariz., in February. More than 2,000 teachers representing 42 states attended; Maher was one of five college/university instructors at the conference.

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are teams of teachers teaching the same content. Within these teams, teachers develop lessons and common formative assessments (CFAs) to ensure that they are teaching for learning. PLCs provide opportunities for teachers to collaborate and learn from each other as well as development assessment and redevelop curriculum. Maher intends to implement PLCs in her courses to introduce her students to their purpose and potential while promoting the same language and methods used in schools today.

Maher is pictured with conference presenter Robert Marzano. Marzano is a leading researcher in education and author of more than 30 books and 150 articles on instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention. Maher plans to implement Marzano's teacher evaluation standards into her methods courses.

Get Wild in the VCSU Jungle

Get Wild in the VCSU Jungle
The 19th annual VCSU Scholarship Auction--scheduled for Friday, April 19, at the Valley City Eagles Club--is getting wild this year. The "Jungle" will explode onto the scene of the Eagles Club, creating a wild and fun atmosphere for the auction.

The social hour and the silent auction begin at 5:00 pm. A buffet dinner will be served from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; the live auction will kick off at 7:00 p.m. This is your chance to bid on some great items while contributing to the success of our students. All proceeds from the auction go directly to scholarships.

Tickets to the auction are $35 each, which includes admission, two beverage tickets, a full buffet dinner, and an opportunity to win!

Tickets may be purchased by stopping by the VCSU Foundation Office or by calling 701-845-7203. The auction is a collaborative effort of the V-500 and Century Club boards.

Viking football video garners attention

A video produced by Nate Pecoraro, Viking football defensive line coach and a VCSU alumnus, received special mention on the front page of the footballscoop.com website.

The video, "If It Were Easy," features the Vikings' early-morning workouts; it can be found on YouTube at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TtCYcKi0dpM.

Pecoraro produced this and other football videos to share with recruits, football alumni and other members of the Viking football family. As the folks at footballscoop.com said, "That's some good stuff."
