Viking Visit Days schedule

Valley City State University is hosting four Viking Visit Days throughout the coming school year. Each Viking Visit Day is held on a Saturday morning. We invite prospective students and their parents to come to VCSU, meet with an academic advisor, visit with Enrollment Services, and take a tour of campus including the residence halls. Some of the Viking Visit Days coincide with athletic or theater events to further expose our visitors to the great things happening on our campus. It’s a wonderful day to show off our Viking Pride! Please put these dates on your calendar. If your academic department assigns faculty to a certain Viking Visit Day, please let Enrollment Services know by emailing kaleen.peterson@vcsu.edu.

Gjovik and Skophammer publish articles

Peder Gjovik, assistant professor of technology education, and Roger Skophammer, former assistant professor and currently an adjunct in the department of technology, had featured articles published in the September 2013 issue of Children’s Technology and Engineering. The journal emphasizes technology and engineering content and methods for elementary educators.

Each issue of the journal focuses on a topic of interest to elementary educators. The September issue concentrated on aspects of design. Skophammer’s article, Design, dealt with the issue of the creativity crisis in elementary curriculum and argued for a balance of constrained versus unconstrained creative design concepts.

Gjovik’s article, The Sketchbook—Indispensable Tool of the Young Designer, was written to support the premise of Skophammer’s article and contained three activity options based on the animated movie How to Train Your Dragon (Dreamworks, 2010). Two activity concepts were constrained with a defined set of materials for students to craft a solution. The third activity concept was less constrained and promoted two materials scenarios. The first scenario suggested a larger set of available materials provided by the teacher. The second promoted allowing students to bring their own materials for the prototype, thus allowing greater creativity in the solution.

Both articles stressed the importance of developing activities that are integrative. Units of this nature allow students to use physical science, biological science, mathematics, language arts, social studies, fine art, technology, and engineering concepts to solve a problem. The goal was to bring engagement, relevancy and applied practices to the elementary classroom.

Communication faculty attend CSTAND conference

Communication faculty attend CSTAND conference
VCSU communication faculty members Shannon VanHorn, associate professor, and Jonna Ziniel, assistant professor, attended the Communication, Speech, and Theatre Association of North Dakota (CSTAND) conference held Sept. 12–14 in Mandan.

VanHorn, most recently the editor of the Journal of the Communication, Speech, and Theatre Association of North Dakota, was elected to the position of second vice president at the conference. She was also part of several panel presentations, including “It’s Not Cheating—It’s a Resource Site,” “Incivility and What We Can Do About It, Continued…” and “Expectations of the First-Year Student.”

Ziniel joined VanHorn on the “It’s Not Cheating—It’s a Resource Site” panel, and she also was on the “Teaching the Fundamentals of Public Speaking in the North Dakota University System” and “Event Planning Roundtable” panels.

Ashley Limesand, VCSU professional communication major, was awarded the CSTAND University Scholarship at the conference luncheon. Limesand was nominated by Ziniel, her advisor, for the award, based on her record of academic achievement and campus involvement.

CSTAND comprises more than 200 members, including arts community representatives and faculty from public and private K–12 and higher education institutions.

Foss participates in state panel discussion

The 2013 North Dakota Governor’s Workforce and HR Conference was held September 18-20, in Fargo. Marcia Foss, VCSU director of career services/internships, was a member of a panel, "Using Internships and Cooperative Experience Activities as a Recruitment Tool."

Other panelists were Russ Karlgaard, North Dakota State College of Science, and Dan Rood, SE Region Career & Technology Center. Each panelist talked about their specific programs and ways that employers need to build their own workforce and tap into the state resources available to them, whether it is reaching potential employees or accessing financial resources through the Department of Commerce. This session was facilitated by Wayne Kutzer, Director of the State Career and Technical Education Department.
