Rhoades ribbon-cutting draws crowd to campus
The $10.3 million renovation and expansion of Rhoades Science Center was celebrated Friday, Oct. 4, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house.

Held indoors because of the weather, the ribbon-cutting crowd of more than 200 filled Rhoades 102 and an overflow room, where guests watched the ceremony via live video.

Speakers at the event included Drew Wrigley, North Dakota lieutenant governor; Steven W. Shirley, VCSU president; Kirsten Baesler, North Dakota superintendent of public instruction and VCSU alumna; and Ray Holmberg, North Dakota District 17 state senator and chair of the appropriations committee.

Also presenting were Joe Stickler, VCSU professor emeritus of science; Erika Schumacher, VCSU alumna and Dickinson veterinarian; and Larry Robinson, VCSU alumnus and executive director of university advancement, and North Dakota District 24 state senator.

A letter of congratulations from Kirsten Diederich, president of the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education, was also read.

Tours and classrooms demonstrations followed the event.

Viking ship sails again

Viking ship sails again
As many of you know there had been a number of conversations over the last few years about the fate of the VCSU Viking Ship. The trailer used for the Viking Ship was in bad shape and unsafe for riders, the mast was difficult to get set up and was very worn out, a few medallions on the ship were damaged, and overall the ship just needed a “sprucing up.” On behalf of Staff Senate, I would like to thank a number of individuals across campus that helped our senate resurrect the VCSU Viking Ship.

Kaleen Peterson and Kevin McDonough were instrumental in organizing the project.
Greg Vanney supplied our senate with the funds necessary to make this project possible.
Jim Boe engineered a new safe and easy way for the ship’s mast to be raised and lowered.
Armando Ramos and the Art Alliance gave the Viking Ship a new, shiny coat of paint.
Tara Praska designed and ordered the new sail for the ship.
Facilities Services did the work necessary to make the trailer safe.

Without the hard work of these people on a very tight timeline, we would not have a beautiful new ship to represent our campus in our community parades. Thank you so much to all that helped in this effort!

Stephanie Roelfsema
Staff Senate President
