Emerging Leaders Competition at VCSU

The Business Department along with DECA and SHR will be hosting the Emerging Leaders Competition (firmly known as BIT Day) on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 8:30 a.m.–2 p.m. on the VCSU campus.

Around 200 students and advisors will be on campus during that time. The majority of the participants will eat in the cafeteria from 11 a.m.–12:15 p.m.

Please forward questions about this event by email to Amber Aberle (845-7526) or LaDonna Anderson (845-7521).

Join in celebration of Chinese New Year

Join in celebration of Chinese New Year
The traditional Chinese New Year’s Day for 2014 is Friday, Jan. 31, the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. The day also marks the beginning of spring and, therefore, this holiday season is also known as the Spring Festival. It is a time for family togetherness and celebration.

VCSU’s Diversity Office and China Club cordially invite you and your friends to a Chinese New Year’s Eve Celebration from 4–6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30, in McFarland 206. Activities will include karaoke (with English, Spanish and Chinese songs); games and riddles with prizes; snacks and beverages; and lots of good luck in celebration of the Year of the Horse.

On Friday, Jan. 31, come to the cafeteria between 11 a.m and 1 p.m. for some Chinese-inspired cuisine. On your way in, stop by the tables in the Student Center hallway and learn to write your name in Chinese! These Friday events are sponsored by VCAB and China Club.

Blood Drive scheduled—Find the Hero in You!

VCSU Student Nurse Organization is sponsoring a Blood Drive Thursday, Feb. 6, 9 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 7, 10 a.m.–1:30 p.m. in the Student Center Skoal Room.

For an appointment contact Betty Tykwinski at 490-2299 or go online to, sponsor code: VCSU.

Everyone is encouraged to donate but there is an urgent need for type O- and O+ donors. Please seriously consider donating this gift of life.

Faculty/staff portrait sessions offered

Faculty and staff may sit for a new directory photo with a professional photographer at two sessions offered in the Norway Room of the Student Center on Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 11 a.m. to noon and Friday, Feb. 7, from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. No appointments needed; just walk in for this free opportunity.

Communication professors to present at CSCA conference

VCSU communication faculty members Shannon VanHorn, associate professor, and Jonna Ziniel, assistant professor, received a Top Panel award for their submission of “Teaching Naked: Stripping the Traditional Classroom by Elevating Engaging Activities.”

The duo will present the panel at the Central States Communication Association’s annual conference April 2–6 in Minneapolis.

VCSU hosts Viking Visit Day

Valley City State University hosted the third Viking Visit Day of the year this past Saturday, Jan. 25, and it was a success! Twenty-five prospective students were signed up, and despite the inclement weather, 15 still made it, including one walk-in. Eleven faculty representing academic areas all over campus visited with prospective students and their parents. A number of athletic recruits, including two from California, visited campus, and one music audition was held.

New this year, we have speakers featuring different pieces of campus life during the Welcome Session. This weekend, Sam Stover talked about the new exciting things going on at the library and the Common Read, Betty Schumacher spoke about Financial Aid and James Adams shared information about the Music Department, bands and ensembles. All were well-received by our guests.

Thank you to all who participated in Viking Visit Day! The time taken out of your Saturday is much appreciated and well worth it to give our prospective students and their families a great experience at VCSU. And for everyone behind the scenes who helped us promote and prepare for Viking Visit Day, know that we couldn’t do it without you. The last Viking Visit Day of the year is on Saturday, Mar. 29, 2014.
