The City of Valley City, ND agreed to invest $150,000 in the Technology Teacher Education Online degree program now being offered by Valley City State University. The investment is expected to fund the operation of the degree program through a transition year into a period of aggressive growth and expansion.
The Technology Education Program at Valley City State University (VCSU) is the nation’s first and only online undergraduate program in Technology Education, and is the first program created to address the new national standards of International Technology Education Association. The program prepares students for careers in K-12 Technology Education, a field expected to experience a shortage of approximately 9,000 teachers by the year 2006 (International Technology Education Association). The program provides training opportunities for teachers currently in the field plus opportunities for individuals seeking to make career changes into the field of K-12 Technology Education. As a fully-online program, instructors communicate with students via the Internet, anywhere and anytime, making it convenient for students to complete the program while working full-time.
The move was initiated in part by a business plan presented to the City Commission by the Valley City/Barnes County Development Corporation.
Jennifer Feist, Director of Development for the Valley City/Barnes County Development Corporation, said, "VCSU is a base industry and a strategic partner to help us grow the economy and create quality, higher paying jobs. The City Commission should be commended for its support and foresight. I think we've made history... again."
Don Mugan, Professor and Chair of the VCSU Department of Technology, said, "We are proud of this program, a state of the art online pre-service and in-service opportunity for technology teachers. It is the right service available at the right time. For example, in North Dakota 20% of technology teachers are emergency certified while 60% are eligible to retire in 3 years. Our tech ed online program is a flexible, convenient solution to a severe need in our schools."
