Basketball: Vikings split conference opener

The Valley City State basketball teams split their conference openers Saturday at Mayville State University.
The Viking men opened the North Star Athletic Association schedule with a 68-59 win over the Comets, while the Viking women lost 76-58 to the No. 16-ranked Mayville women.
Valley City State made 12 of 14 free throw attempts in the final two minutes as they held off a late Mayville charge for a 68-59 victory Saturday night in Mayville.
After battling back and forth for the first 20 minutes, the Vikings and Comets ended the first half tied at 32-32.
VCSU established control in the second half, leading by as many as 13 points before the Comets rallied to within 56-51. The Vikings put the game away with strong free throw shooting in the final minutes, including a 6-for-6 performance by Jeremy Ware.
AJ McDonald fouled out but led the Viking offense with 15 points. Freshman Quinton Peterson put together another strong game for VCSU with 15 points. The Vikings are now 9-10 overall and 1-0 in North Star play.
Alex Herman led the Comets with 16 points in the loss.

The No. 16 Comet women won their 11th straight game Saturday as they held off VCSU 76-58.
After a competitive first 15 minutes, Mayville used runs at the end of the first half and start of the second half to build a 45-29 lead. But the Vikings would storm back, using an 18-5 run to cut Mayville's lead down to 50-47 midway through the second half.
Mayville had the answer though and pulled away down the stretch for the conference victory.
In the loss, VCSU was led by Brittany Lehner with 12 points. Courtney Dixon posted nine points and 12 rebounds.
Valley City State drops to 10-7 overall and 0-1 in North Star play. Saturday's loss ended a six-game win streak for the Vikings.
Liza Hoglo and Marcisa McMillan each scored 18 points to lead the Comets (16-2, 2-0 NSAA).
