Last week, Doug Hamilton was named Valley City State University’s Employee of the Quarter for Winter 2014.
Doug has been employed at VCSU in Facilities Services for 21 years. He works primarily in the Student Center with responsibilities for maintenance and the overall operation of the swimming pool. Additionally, Doug wears multiple hats in Facilities Services fulfilling duties as needed across the campus. Other duties of Doug’s include troubleshooting and taking care of the many appliances across campus, and he also assists in preparing Vangstad Auditorium for events.
About the work environment on campus, Doug replied, “VCSU is a great community. The culture is one of caring and sharing. The diverse background of our faculty and staff has enabled us to continue to grow as we set our vision to the future. I am proud to be a part of the VCSU community.”
Asked about VCSU’s greatest asset, Doug commented, “The greatest asset we have at VCSU is our student population. They are the heart and soul of the campus. Over the years, I have gotten to know many of the students through the work-study program. I have witnessed their growth during their time with us. They often allow me to share with their accomplishments and several do stay in touch following graduation.”
Regarding the many changes Doug has seen at VCSU during his 21 years on campus, he further commented, “The greatest change I have witnessed has been in the technology field. When I started, there was no Information Technology department. Distance learning was only a dream. Computers were large, slow, and used for data processing.”
Doug is a native of Kansas and originally came to North Dakota in the 1980s. He and his wife, Videlle, live on a family farm just north of Valley City. They enjoy the quiet lifestyle on the farm, but also keep busy with a host of animals including cattle, chickens, sheep, dogs, and cats. Doug noted that their children are grown and they are content with the empty nest. In his spare time Doug also enjoys golfing, deer hunting, and watching football.
Congratulations to Doug on his very deserving honor of being named Employee of the Quarter at VCSU for Winter 2014. A big word of “Thank You” to Doug for all of his efforts on a daily basis in supporting the teaching and learning environment for the faculty, staff, and students at Valley City State University!
