Baseball: Vikings split doubleheader with Dordt College

The Viking baseball team opened its 2014 spring break trip with a doubleheader split Thursday against Dordt College in Tucson, Ariz.

Dordt College picked up a 2-1 victory in the first game, but VCSU bounced back with a 5-4 victory in game two, winning it on a walk-off walk.

The Vikings are now 5-8 this season. They continue their spring trip today with games against Olivet Nazarene (6 p.m. CST) and Dakota Wesleyan (9:30 p.m. CST). Live stats are available here: Live Stats

Dordt College 2, VCSU 1
Dordt College struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. After loading the bases up with no outs, Dordt scored two runs on a sacrifice fly and a Viking error.

Valley City State got one run back in the top of the fifth when Brady Anderson plated Anthony Necochea with a sacrifice fly. The Vikings left runners on 1st and 3rd in the inning through, two of nine total runners VCSU left on base in the game.

Freshman third baseman Nate Bagby went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Viking offense. Kevin Jones added two hits. VCSU outhit Dordt 9-6.

Starting pitcher Bryce Venaas was tagged with the hard-luck loss. He allowed just six hits and one earned run in six innings of work.


VCSU 5, Dordt College 4
In the nightcap, Valley City State picked up a 5-4 victory to salvage a doubleheader split. The Vikings never trailed in the game, but it was tied three different times.

VCSU led 4-3 going into the top of the seventh before Dordt tied it at 4-4 on an RBI double. The Vikings would answer though with a walk-off win in the bottom of the inning.

Robert Wiley started the game-winning rally with a single and then moved to third on a one-out double by Cole Honl. Dordt loaded the bases with an intentional walk, and then Jake Rambow drew a four-pitch walk to bring in Wiley for the winning run.

Wiley was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and scored three of the Viking runs. Brady Anderson went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Honl went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Kevin Jones started the Viking scoring with a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning to score Wiley and Anderson. Dordt tied it at 2-2 before Honl's RBI single in the third made it 3-2. Again, Dordt tied the game before Anderson's RBI double in the fifth gave VCSU a 4-3 lead.

Jaime Villarreal picked up the win on the mound, working two innings in relief. He allowed three hits and one run while striking out four. Chip Rosales started on the mound, allowing five hits and three earned runs in five solid innings.
