The Valley City State baseball team earned a win in game one Friday in Tucson, Ariz., but dropped the nightcap as they finished 1-1 on the day.
The Vikings opened the day with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Olivet Nazarene. VCSU trailed 3-1 before scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for victory.
In game two, Dakota Wesleyan scored three runs in both the first and second innings, and then held off a Viking rally in a 6-4 game. VCSU is now 6-9 on the season and 2-2 on the spring trip.
VCSU 5, Olivet Nazarene 4
VCSU trailed 3-1 entering the sixth inning before they scored four runs for the victory. An RBI triple by Brady Anderson and a sacrifice fly by Cole Honl tied the game at 3-3. Later in the inning, Kevin Jones delivered the game-winning hit, a pinch-hit two-run single to put the Vikings up 5-3.
Tom Houdek went 2-for-2 at the plate. Four other Vikings each had one hit each.
Brandon Welinski earned the win on the mound, pitching three innings and allowing just one hit and one run. Corey Pudas started on mound, allowing seven hits and one earned run in four innings.
Dakota Wesleyan 6, VCSU 4
Valley City State outhit Dakota Wesleyan 13-4, but four Viking errors led to three unearned runs for Dakota Wesleyan, which led 6-3 after two innings.
Kevin Jones led the Vikings offense with three hits and an RBI. Kayl Hamre and Hayden Johnson each had a pair of hits.
Chris Holden took the loss. He started for the Vikings and worked five innings, allowing three hits and six runs, but only three earned runs. Anthony Necochea pitched one scoreless inning in relief.
