Baseball: Grace slips past VCSU, 5-4

The Viking baseball team outhit Grace University (Neb.) 11-10 on Monday, but Grace came out ahead on the scoreboard, winning 5-4 in Tucson, Ariz.

VCSU jumped on top 1-0 after Cole Honl's RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Grace responded with a single run in the third, and then rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth.

Valley City State rallied back to tie it at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning after two runs scored on an error and Mike Gershman drove in a run with an RBI single.

Grace again had the answer, plating a single run in the top of the seventh. The Vikings were unable to rally back, stranding runners at first base in the seventh and eighth innings, and going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth.

Kevin Jones, Ryan Hammargren and Dan Buehner all collected two hits each in the loss.

Brandon Welinski started on the mound for VCSU, allowing six hits and two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Only three of Grace's runs were earned after four VCSU errors led to two unearned runs.

Up next: The Vikings (6-11) will try to rebound with some wins on Tuesday, March 18. Valley City State takes on Hastings at 11 a.m. CST and Doane (Neb.) at 3 p.m. CST.
