Baseball: Vikings fall 8-4 against Doane

The Viking baseball team was hampered by errors and missed opportunities Friday as they fell 8-4 to Doane College in Tucson, Ariz.

The Vikings committed six errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs. Doane scored three runs each in the first and second innings, taking an early lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Vikings racked up plenty of hits – outhitting Doane 12-11 – but left 12 runners on base. VCSU scored one run in the sixth and three in the ninth.

Derek Elliott and Cole Honl each racked up three hits in the contest. Dan Buehner and Brady Anderson both added a pair of hits as the four guys collected 10 of team's 12 total hits.

Mike Gershman took the loss on the mound, allowing nine hits and four earned runs. After giving up six total runs in the first two innings, Gershman settled down to work 3 2/3 more scoreless innings before being lifted in the sixth.

The loss drops Valley City State's record to 8-14 this year. VCSU is 4-7 on its Arizona trip. The Vikings continue the trip with five more games, including a single contest Saturday at 11 a.m. CDT against Bethesda.
