Savannah McMillin had a walk-off single and both Ashley Metcalf and Morgan Nalley picked up complete-game victories as Valley City State swept Mayville State, 3-1 and 2-1 on Wednesday in North Star softball action.

Valley City State improves to 13-15 overall and is now back to 2-2 in conference play after the home sweep at Shelly Ellig Field.

McMillin completed the sweep in game two with a single down the left field line that scored Shayna Taffinder in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Up next: Valley City State has cancelled its Thursday games at Concordia College. The Vikings will play conference doubleheaders on Saturday (2/4 p.m.) and Sunday (1/3 p.m.) at Presentation College in Aberdeen.

VCSU 3, Mayville State 1
Ashley Metcalf scattered six hits and allowed just one run as the Vikings won game one 3-1. In seven innings of work, Metcalf walked just one and struck out three to earn her second victory of the season.

The Vikings struck first in the bottom of the third as Taffinder drove in Olivia Damge with an RBI single. Mayville tied it back up in the top of the fourth, but in the bottom of the inning Liz Hall-Sewell hit her second home run in as many days – a laser-shot to left center – that put the Vikings back up 2-1.

VCSU added an insurance run in the sixth when Hall-Sewell came around to score on a wild pitch after reaching on a double.

Hall-Sewell had two of VCSU's seven hits and scored two of the three runs. Five different Vikings had one hit each.

VCSU 2, Mayville State 1
Savannah McMillin's RBI single scored Shayna Taffinder with no outs in the seventh as the Vikings won 2-1 on a walk-off.

Taffinder opened the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on an error before McMillin drove her in with a shallow single to left field.

It made a winner of pitcher Morgan Nalley, who allowed just three hits and one unearned run in the complete-game victory. Nalley improves to 3-3 on the season and lowers her season ERA to 2.47.

McMillin and Katie Cameron each had two hits and an RBI to lead the offense. Four other Vikings had one hit each. Mayville led 1-0 after the first inning, but Nalley shut out the Comets the rest of the way as VCSU tied the game in the third before winning it in the seventh.
