Valley City State held a 2-0 lead against one of top teams in the conference Friday, but could not close down the stretch as Mayville State rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Vikings.
In game two of the North Star Athletic Association baseball doubleheader at Charlie Brown Field, it was all Comets as they won 14-3 to complete the sweep.
Valley City State (17-26, 5-7 NSAA) will play at Mayville State (36-11, 10-4 NSAA) on Saturday for another doubleheader at 1/3 p.m.
Friday's games were the first for VCSU since the death of teammate Dan Buehner. Prior to the opening game Friday, both teams wore #15 T-shirts during warmups to honor Buehner, who wore #15 as the Vikings starting catcher.
Mayville State 3, VCSU 2
Bryce Venaas was stellar on the mound, holding Mayville State scoreless through five innings as the Vikings built a 2-0 lead. The Vikings scored their first run in the third when Cole Honl's 2-out RBI single scored Jake Rambow for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, VCSU would add its second run when Jared Meiklejohn doubled to left field, scoring Anthony Meyer with two outs.
VCSU held that 2-0 lead until Mayville tied it up with a non-traditional rally in the sixth. With runners on first and second and one out, the Vikings got a ground ball up the middle. VCSU got the first out at second base, but threw wild to first base trying to turn a double play, which allowed a run to score from second.
John Pistulka then beat out an infield single, which allowed Spencer Kidder to score from second base and tie the game.
In the top of the seventh, Mayville's Rowdy Dove opened the inning with a single up the middle against VCSU pitcher Mike Gershman. He moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a groundout and then came in to score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly.
Venaas went six innings on the mound for VCSU, allowing just four hits and two runs (one earned). Gershman worked an inning in relief and was hit with the loss.
VCSU outhit the Comets 10-5. Both Brady Anderson and Cole Honl went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the offense. Meiklejohn and Honl drove in the two Viking runs.
