Mayville State erupted for 13 runs in the fifth inning, blowing open what was a 2-2 tie game, en route to a 20-3 victory over Valley City State.
The Comets advance to the Sunday semifinal game at 11 a.m. where they will play University of Jamestown.
Valley City State drops into loser-out action and will take on Dickinson State at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Mayville State struck first in the first inning, scoring two runs off VCSU starter Corey Pudas. The Vikings would answer right back, plating two runs in the bottom of the inning on Cole Honl's 2-run single off Mayville State starter Aaron Dick.
Dick and Pudas settled in and both posted scoreless second, third and fourth innings. But in the fifth, Mayville State knocked out Pudas after the first five batters reached. The inning turned into a nightmare for the Vikings as Mayville State sent 17 batters to the plate and knocked around three different Viking pitchers. VCSU also committed a pair of errors that led to four unearned runs.
When the dust cleared Mayville State had a commanding 15-2 lead and coasted to the seven-inning victory. Aaron Dick pitched a complete game for the victory.
