Valley City State University will host a farewell reception for President Steven W. Shirley and his family on Wednesday, May 14, from 3:30–5:30 p.m. in the Skoal Room of the VCSU Student Center.

The public is invited to attend; light refreshments will be served.

Along with his family—wife, Jennifer, and daughter, Anna—Shirley will soon be leaving Valley City for Minot, N.D., where he will begin serving as president of Minot State University on July 1, 2014.

Shirley became VCSU president in July 2008. Under his leadership, VCSU has experienced sustained enrollment growth, made key additions to its academic offerings and completed the $10.3 million expansion and renovation to Rhoades Science Center, among many other achievements. In each of the last five years, VCSU has been ranked either the No. 1 or No. 2 public regional college in the Midwest, according to U.S. News.

Prior to joining VCSU, Shirley had served as vice president for student affairs at Dakota State University in Madison, S.D., and as business professor and director of learning abroad at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

A native of Fargo, N.D., Shirley earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration and doctorate in higher education, all from the University of North Dakota.
