Dr. Larry Grooters Retires
Valley City State University (VCSU) announced today that Dr. Larry Grooters is retiring from his role as Chair of the Division of Education, Psychology and Technology.

Dr. Ellen Chaffee, President of VCSU, said, "In his 42 years at VCSU, Larry has been a key factor shaping the education of thousands of VCSU graduates who have gone on to be come teachers at primary and secondary schools in North Dakota and throughout the region. He has made enormous contributions to the teaching program, and by extension, to the education of North Dakota. He will be deeply missed."

Dr. Grooters graduated from VCSU in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Social Science. He taught at Casselton High School for three years and at Dickinson High School for three years physical education and history, and was the Head Coach of the boy’s basketball team and track team. In 1961, he received his Master of Education degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He joined the faculty of VCSU in 1963 to teach in the Division of Health and Physical Education and serve as the Head Coach of the Track and Cross Country teams, and as the Assistant Coach of the Basketball team. In 1971, he completed his Ed.D. in Education at the University of North Dakota. In 1982, Dr. Grooters moved from the Division of Health and Physical Education into the Teacher Education program and became Chair of the division and head of Teacher Education.

His many accomplishments include being inducted into the North Dakota Official’s Hall of Fame (1990) and the VCSU Viking Hall of Fame (1995), and receiving the VCSU Distinguished Alumni Award (2002). He has numerous professional associations including the North Dakota Education Association, the National Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, North Dakota Association of Teacher Education, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. He has served on the North Dakota Standards and Practices Program Approval Advisory Committee, the North Dakota Program Approval Advisory Board, NCATE Visiting Team Members, the Greater Barnes County Consortium, and the AACTE/NCATE annual meetings.
