Adam DeHaan’s career as a head baketball coach began with a three pointer but it was a three pointer at the buzzer that gave him a victory in his first game as the mentor at Valley City State basketball team.

Paul Henderson’s rainbow with three seconds left lifted the Vikings to a 75-74 win over the University of Sioux Falls. The Cougars had broken a 72-72 tie on a shot by Ryan Coapstick with sixteen seconds in regulation.

The game lead changed hands nine times in the contest with the Vikings leading 42-38 at halftime.

Austin McCullogh lead the Vikings with 19 points on six of ten shooting with four three pointers including the initial trey of the game. Ed Meyer and Henderson added 16 and 17 points respectively. All three are new additions to the Vikings program. Senior captain Steve Strittmatter added 11 rebounds.

The Vikings (1-0) host Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday night at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.
