Bringing in the Students

Little did Dan Klein and I realize when we met that much later we would be working together for many years. Dan has been VCSU's Director of Enrollment Services since 1999, but we met nearly ten years earlier when he was a statewide leader as a student at North Dakota State University. Following graduation in 1991, he worked as an admission counselor at NDSU. From 1993 to 1995, he taught in the Social Sciences department at Moorhead Senior High School. I was delighted when he agreed to join the VCSU staff in 1995.
It is difficult for Dan to nail down particular activities where he spends most of his time because the activities of Enrollment Services are so diverse. As director, he manages the mission and goals of his office and the strategies and tactics they employ to accomplish their goals. His favorite part of the job is working with students and their families as they make plans for obtaining a college education.
There have been many highlights along the way, but one that sticks out in his mind was when a graduate this past spring grabbed his hand as the staff and faculty walked through the applauding graduates on the way to the commencement ceremony in Vangstad Auditorium. The graduate said, "I owe a lot of this to you. You got me started and told me it was possible. Thank you!" That Dan will always treasure.
Dan's office recruits students to the campus and connects students to the programs we offer. He is also part of various committees and activities on campus, where he strives to assist in making continuous improvement to the programs and services we provide students. His involvement in state and regional organizations such as past chair of the North Dakota Council of the Dakota Association for College Admission Counseling, past chair of the North Dakota University System Admission Officers, and others within his profession gives him additional insights into how we can improve VCSU. His involvement also ensures that other professionals in the state and region are aware of the qualities of VCSU.
In terms of community service, Dan is a director on the Barnes Rural Water District board, a board member on the Sanborn Rural Fire Protection District; assisted when time allowed on the volunteer fire department; served as church trustee as well as president of the church council; lector and participant in church choir; and has been a member of the VCSU Relay for Life team.
We are fortunate to have this dedicated professional on our team.
