Gulf Breeze, FL – Dustin Grabowska's two out, full count two-run home run lifted the Vikings to a 7-6 extra inning win over Fisher College at Shoreline Park.
It was the second time in two innings that VCSU rallied from a deficit. Trailing 5-4 in the ninth inning Grabowska opened the frame getting hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by Jeremy Wiebe. Grabowska scored one out later on a single by Chauncey Calhoun. Extra effort by Wiebe on a passed ball tied the game and sent the Vikings into extra frames.
Fisher scored on a two-out single to take the lead back in the tenth.
In the home half of the tenth, Braden Raskob-Smith singled to open the inning before two strikeouts brought Grabowska to the plate. Duncan Sourisseau running for Raskob-Smith stole second to get into scoring position before Grabowska sent a 3-2 offering towering over the scoreboard in right and was mobbed at home plate by teammates.
Valley City spotted starter Drew Calanchie a 3-run lead after one inning on an error, a walk and hits by Calhoun and Pat Olson.
The Falcons took a 5-3 lead in the third, capped off by a two-run home run by Steve D'Entremont and the score would stay that way until the ninth.
Calanchie threw five innings, scattering eight hits and five strikeouts. Steve Franklin shined in relief, throwing four and two-thirds innings of one-hit baseball, striking out three before giving way to Nathan Erbstoesser in the tenth. Erbstoesser threw to two hitters picking up the win.
Grabowska and Calhoun each had two hits and two RBI to pace the Vikings. Reid Arnold and Olson added a hit and RBI each while Wiebe scored two runs.
The Vikings ended the trip hitting .351 (100-for-285) 86 runs and 43 stolen bases. Calhoun paced the Vikings hitting .640 (15-for-25) with nine stolen bases and 12 runs scored. Wiebe hit .458 with nine RBI, 12 runs and was 8-for-10 in stolen bases.
Bryce Ingram (.438), Olson (.429, 10 RBI) Grabowska (.375, 9 runs, 5 stolen bases), Arnold (.345, 10 RBI) and Scott Dusessoy (.295, 8/9 stolen bases) rounded out the regulars at or near the .300 mark after 10 games.
On the pitching side, starters Marc Wilson (2.45 ERA, 10 K, 2-0) Jason Beilke (2.45 ERA, 9 K, 1-0) Drew Calanchie (10 IP, 0-1) and Steve Franklin (4.5 ERA) led the Vikings each with at least 10 innings pitched.
The bullpen pitched well led by Mike Fox (4.2 IP, 3.86 ERA, 5 K, 1-0) Nathan Erbstoesser (4.0 IP, 2.45 ERA, 1 save, 1 win) and Wylie Wisnewski (3.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 win).
Dustin Grabowska (5 IP, 0.00 ERA won his only outing of the week posting a 10-0 shutout of Myers University.
VCSU also played well defensively committing only eight errors in the 10 games.
The Vikings ended the week with an 8-2 record at the RussMatt Invitational in their final tune up before entering conference play next weekend against Dakota State University.
