A message from Dr. Chaffee:

I am sad to report that Lena Vangstad passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2007. In three weeks, she would have celebrated her 106th birthday. The funeral is Saturday, July 7 at 11:00 at Elim Lutheran Church just outside Osakis, MN.

Each year during Commencement exercises, I have said, "We are in Vangstad Auditorium, named for two outstanding people who retired from here more than 30 years ago. Lena and Thilda Vangstad are twins who gave a combined 60 years of their remarkable lives to this university. Many of our outstanding alumni credit The Twins for instilling self-confidence and direction in them when they were young and vulnerable."

Over the last 14 years, I visited these remarkable women as often as I could, and I learned something every time. They did not ask me, "What's new?" because they made a point of knowing. Instead, they asked astute questions about why, or how, or who. Lena and Thilda will continue as VCSU's guardian angels, just from a different vantage point. God bless Lena's immortal and incomparable soul as she and her twin are reunited in heaven.
