Valley City State University (VCSU) announced that it is now offering new certificate programs in two rapidly-growing fields of information technology: Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Enterprise Applications.
VCSU president Dr. Ellen Chaffee said the new certificates represent an innovative way to address unmet needs of businesses in North Dakota. "More and more, businesses are using CRM and enterprise software as strategic tools to enhance their competitiveness, yet most IT programs focus exclusively on computer technologies such as programming, networking or database management. Our new programs are unique in that they give students an appreciation for both the technology and the business strategies that drive the technology. We are proud to be the first university in the region to offer programs in these emerging subjects to our students."
The certificates combine study in traditional IT subjects with new coursework in CRM software and enterprise software applications. Although the programs are based in technology, they are available to students of any major, and can be particularly attractive for students planning a career in business. Dr. Kerry Gregoryk, Chair of VCSU's Division of Business and Information Technology, said, "In most organizations, enterprise applications are managed by the IT department, but they work very closely with end-users who work in sales, marketing, accounting, or manufacturing. This is one reason that companies look for employees who offer both technical skills and an understanding of the strategies and processes that drive the business."
The certificate in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) prepares students for 'hands-on' work with CRM applications: software that is used by organizations to manage and leverage information about their customers. A growing view that information about an organization's customers is a vital strategic asset has made CRM software one of the most rapidly growing segments of the software industry. Typical applications deal with such "customer-facing" activities as customer services, sales and marketing.
The certificate in Enterprise Applications provides students with a background in a class of business software that includes enterprise resource planning (ERP), accounting, human resources, and manufacturing. Because VCSU is a member of the SAP University Alliances program, the university is able to integrate enterprise software from SAP into certificate coursework, giving students valuable experience applying content and theory to an industry-standard system.
