United States Senator Byron Dorgan is scheduled to deliver the commencement address at Valley City State University's (VCSU's) 117th commencement exercises scheduled for 10:00 am Saturday, May 16 at the W. E. Osmon Fieldhouse on the VCSU campus.

"Valley City State University has earned a reputation as a great institution, and I was honored to receive an invitation to deliver a commencement address there," Dorgan said.

Dr. Steven Shirley, president of VCSU, said, "Senator Dorgan has long been a champion of the value of higher education, and he is very supportive of the colleges and universities within North Dakota. We are honored to have him join us and deliver the keynote address at VCSU's 117th commencement, and I am pleased to have him speak during my first year as president at VCSU."

In this year's exercises, 167 undergraduates are eligible to participate. Among them are Joshua Keller (Bottineau) and Benjamin Reile (Fargo), the first students to complete VCSU's Fisheries & Wildlife Management degree program (Bachelor of Science) under a collaborative agreement with Minot State University-Bottineau. Ben plans to work for the Corps of Engineers as a Park Ranger and eventually become a game warden in North Dakota. Josh plans to pursue a career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, or a similar agency. Tiffany Ost (Valley City) will speak on behalf of the undergraduates.

Also eligible to participate are 23 students in VCSU's online Master of Education program. Elizabeth Undem, a practicing library media specialist at Barnes County North public school, will be the first graduate from the new Library & Information Technologies concentration, and will also be one of the speakers during the ceremony.

Seating for the ceremony is by ticket only, but it will be available by streamed video from the VCSU web site at no charge. The public is invited to a reception that immediately follows at the Epworth United Methodist Church.
