Viking Golf Celebrates Inaugural SeasonJul. 28th, 2009 9:41 AM | Updated: Aug. 03rd, 2009 1:15 PM
VCSU is set to resume men's and women's golf as a varsity sport for the 2009-2010 season. VCSU's team will become the 5th men's team and 6th women's team in the Dakota Athletic Conference.
Men's golf was a fixture on campus from 1936 to 1993 with an interruption between 1938 and 1947. Over these years, the men won conference titles a total of 12 times and NAIA district titles twice, and the 1947 and 1948 teams have been inducted into the Viking Hall of Fame. The most recent season for Women's golf was 1983. Coaching the new teams are Nathan Stover for the men and Ryan Bomstad for the women. Both coaches serve as assistant basketball coaches as well. Stover's team has 10 student-athletes committed including three transfers and five incoming freshmen. Bomstad has three committed team members. One commitment for the men's team is current Valley City Town and Country Club men's champion Sean Krall. Both teams will compete in the fall and spring seasons with six events counting towards the Dakota Athletic Conference standings. The teams will host a meet in the fall, but since DAC regulations require that all events be played on 18-hole courses, the two-day tournament must be held out of town. The teams will practice on local courses. "We are excited to begin the process of growing the athletic department," said B.J. Pumroy, VCSU athletic director. The department is also in the process of adding Cross Country and Track & Field teams. The first season for Cross Country will be the Fall of 2010 followed by Track & Field in Spring of 2011. 2009-2010 Golf Schedule
