The Valley City State University Viking Softball team has been recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association with the Girls Got Game Top 10 Academic Team award for their work in the classroom in the 2008-2009 academic school year. The Vikings were the number five team in the nation with an overall team grade point average of 3.457.

In addition to achieving the team award nine Viking Softball players received individual recognition and were awarded the Girls Got Game/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete award. To receive the award the student-athlete must have an overall grade point average of 3.5 for the academic year. Receiving the award were freshman Amanda Brown, Limon, CO; Sara Gullickson, Spiritwood, ND and Jennifer Shadlock, Brandon, MB. Sophomores Jane Pettit, Rushford, MN; Mandy Johnson, Barnesville, MN; Cyndi Figol, Brandon, MB and Margaret Wilson, Breckenridge, MN. Rounding out the list for the Vikings were juniors Krystal Hathaway, Winnipeg, MB and Amanda Carter, Teulon, MB.
