By Ryan Cunningham NewsDakota.com
Valley City--The Vikings avenged their worst loss in several years with a 15-10 win over South Dakota Mines in the Dacotah Bank DAC Bowl Sunday at the FargoDome in Fargo.
Trent Kosel's (Jr., Edgeley, ND) 22 yard touchdown pass to LeTheo Proctor (So., Anchorage, AK) pushed the Vikings to the lead at 12-10 late in the second half. Marineo Tosluuku (Sr., Naples. FL) added a 41 yard field goal to secure the lead late.
The Vikings played Mines in Rapid City two weeks ago. After taking a 13-0 lead, they surrendered 53 unanswered points en route to a humiliating 60-20 loss.
The Viking defense held South Dakota Mines scoreless through the entire second half. The Vikings scored the first touchdown on a 59 yard trick play, a double reverse that saw Tommy Zinke (RFr., Rolla, ND) hit Mike McAtee (RFr., Rolla, ND) for a scoring pass in the opening half.
Mines' lone touchdown came on a touchdown throw from Nick Russell to Jamie Dale, giving the Hardrockers a 10-6 lead in the second quarter.
The win gave the Vikings a 3-5 record in the Dakota Athletic Conference, and a 3-7 overall finish to the 2009 season.
