Head women's volleyball coach Craig Case is pleased to announce the signing of Valley City High School standout Mattie Cruff. The Valley City native is the daughter of Jodi and Lonnie Scherr and Brad Cruff. 'We're very excited to have Mattie join our program,' commented Coach Case. 'I've known her ever since I've been in Valley City and I'm excited to be able to coach her at the college level.'

The 5'10 middle/outside hitter has been starting on the varsity team since she was a sophomore. This past season Cruff was the team captain and awarded with the Hi-Liner Award. 'Since I've known Mattie I've always been impressed with her passion and dedication to the sport of volleyball,' stated Case. This passion and dedication paid off this year as she picked up All-District honors for District 5 and led her team in blocks and kills.

When asked why she chose Valley City State University and Viking Volleyball Mattie stated, 'Since I have been training with club volleyball the past four years I have become very familiar with the VCSU Volleyball program. Coach Case's passion for the sport combined with his dedication to this program motivates me as a player to become the best that I can be.' In terms of the university Cruff replied, 'VCSU is an innovative facility with an excellent nationwide reputation. With its dedication to professionalism and commitment to individual attention, I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity in my own home town.'

'Mattie's versatility as a middle, outside, and rightside hitter give her a great opportunity to compete for a position here in our lineup. If she's as committed to bettering herself at the next level like she has demonstrated in her high school career, I'm excited to see how she develops in our program,' stated Case. 'We're very lucky to have a local player of Mattie's caliber decide to stay in town and play ball for us.'

[image2]'After considering several universities, I chose VCSU because it offers strong academics, is a welcoming community, and I can play the sport I love. Several of my family members have attended and graduated from VCSU and all have had positive experiences. I feel that I am at home here,' concluded Cruff.

Mattie joins Brenna Johansen (Beulah, North Dakota) and Beth Jochim (Cooperstown, North Dakota) as signees for VCSU's 2010 class.
