Viking Baseball Notches Another Win

Valley City--The Viking baseball team grabbed their second straight victory Tuesday, defeating Presentation College of Aberdeen, SD, 12-4 at Charlie Brown Field in Valley City.
The win followed their first Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) win of the year Sunday, when they shut out Dickinson State 3-0. That win broke a 15-game losing streak.
The Vikings recovered quickly from a shaky defensive start to outrun the Saints, pounding out 14 hits. Josh Standing Elk (Sr., Bismarck, ND, right) was 3-4 with an RBI. Cory Arnason (Sr., Airdrie, AB) pitched seven innings of three-hit baseball, striking out eight, while not allowing an earned run, to get the win.
Things started badly for the Vikings, as the first two Saints' batters reached on errors by the pitcher and first baseman. Both men came home to score, giving the Saints a 2-0 lead after a half-inning.
Valley City State bounced back, starting their first at-bat with three straight singles from Cliff Vasquez (So., Tucson, AZ, left), Tanner Bombenger (So., Fargo, ND), and Josh Evans (So., Hayfield, MN). Standing Elk added a two-out RBI single, and the Vikings led 3-2 after one.
Leading 5-3, the Vikings put the game out of reach with another three-run inning in the sixth. Derek Zitzow (Fr., Valley City, ND, right) came up with an RBI single, and the Vikings executed two bunts in the inning, one a sqeeze off of the bat of Vazquez, to score the final run, taking an 8-3 lead.
Zitzow and Vasquez would add back-to-back RBI doubles in the eighth to tack on a pair of insurance runs. Joey Duttenhefer (Fr., Galchutt, ND) allowed a run in the ninth, but pitched two innings in a non-save situation to finish the game.
The Vikings are now 6-28, and face Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD, Wednesday for one nine-inning game.
