Viking Baseball Splits with Comets
By Ryan Cunningham NewsDakota.com April 29 Valley City--The Viking baseball team grabbed a split with Mayville State in a mid-week doubleheader Wednesday in Mayville. Defensive breakdowns may have denied the Vikings a sweep, as they committed four errors and surrendered three unearned runs in game one, losing 8-5. They responded with 16 hits in the nightcap, winning 13-5. Game one starter Cory Arnason (Sr., Airdrie, AB) got knocked around early, giving up four runs in each of the first and second innings. He allowed only five hits and a pair of walks over six innings of work, but errors by the defense made the effort fall short. Josh Evans (So., Hayfield, MN, right) provided the offensive punch with a grand slam homerun in the foruth, an inning where the Vikings scored all five of their runs. Josh Standing Elk (Sr., Bismarck, ND) was 3-4 at the dish. The Vikings slugged their way to a big 10-2 lead after their third at-bat in the second game, and waltzed to a 13-5 win to gain the split. Derek Zitzow (Fr., Valley City, ND) had four hits in five trips, with three doubles. He scored four times and drove in a pair. Dylan Carlson (Fr., Alexandria, MN) had three hits, including a double. Evans drove in three runs and added a double, as the Vikings six extra-base hits in the game. The games did not count in the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) standings. |
