Head women's volleyball coach Craig Case is pleased to announce the signing of Aurissa Martens from Nellie McClung High School. The standout middle hitter is the daughter of Sherry Martens. 'We couldn't be happier getting Aurissa,' commented Case. 'She possesses all the athletic tools that our middles need and from a personality standpoint she's a perfect fit with our team.'
The 6'1' Martens was the key hitter for the Nellie McClung Stingers this past season leading them to a Zone 6 championship. Head high school coach Karen Lewarne commented, 'Aurissa became a starting middle in the fall of her grade 10 year and has perfected the position. Aurissa can see something done and then after about six attempts she has mastered the move.' Lewarne concluded, 'She has everything one could want: skill, dedication, desire, strength, motivation, heart, responsibility, and respect.'
'Aurissa brings a ton of athleticism and ability to our lineup,' commented Case. 'She will help us build some depth in the middle and basically all hitting positions with her athleticism. She's a proven player at the prep level and I expect her to continue developing and delivering a the college level.' During Marten's high school career she earned the following accolades: 2-time member of 'A' provincial volleyball championship team, 2-time provincial volleyball 'A' MVP, Named to the 2010 Manitoba graduating all-star team, Member of 2010 Zone 6 champion volleyball team, 2009 and 2010 Zone 6 All-Star, Named Manitoba High School Rural Athlete of the Week, and was an Honor Roll student her entire high school career.
When asked about attending VCSU Aurissa commented, 'After my visit at VCSU I was very impressed with what I saw. Everyone was friendly and I liked how close everything was together on campus. Coming from a small town, the community-like atmosphere made things more comfortable for me.'
'I really feel like this is a perfect fit for us and Aurissa,' commented Coach Case. 'She is a complete player and person and I think she will instantly make an impact on our team and on campus. I'm excited to see what she does in her college career.'
