138 Golfers Partake in Scholarship Fund Raising Event
On Saturday, June 6, the 15th annual Viking Scramble was held at the Valley City Town and Country Club and Bjornson Park. The courses were full as 28 teams including 138 golfers took to the links for a 5 person scramble.
There were three flights and prizes were handed out to the winners and runner's up teams.
In the women's/senior division, the team of Peg Person, Annette Ambuehl, Connie Courtney, Loni Hall and VCSU women's basketball coach Jill DeVries won the division with a 8 under par 63. They received VCSU dry fit polo shirts as their prize. Runner up team in the division was the team of Nicole Swenson, Erin Metcalf, Tara Glandt, Jenny Callahan and Steph Ness with a 3 under.
In the open division, the team of Tim Ost, Brent Gustafson, Jeff Brown, Richard Webb and Jason Thornton carded at 59 for a 12 under par. They received VCSU mock turtlenecks as their prizes. Runner's up in the division were John Olstad, Thad Engberg, Travis Engen and VCSU Assistant Football Coach, Rob Hunt. They shot a 10 under 61.
The Championship Division was won with a 14 under par 57 by Derek Rogers, TJ Hansen, Erik Hansen, Josh Holm and Justin Thornton. They received VCSU baseball style sweatshirts. The 2nd place team in the Championship division included Don Bauer, Bob King, Kyle Bauer, Jack Eagan and Jim Dew who were two shots off with a 59.
Contests were held throughout the day and no one hit a hole in one on the second hole at the Country Club to win a car from Miller Motors. VCSU President Steven Shirley won the longest put contest on the Country Club's third hole by draining a 47' 1' put. Former VCSU women's basketball player Loni Hall won the closest to the pin contest (11 inches away) on the 6th hole at the Country Club as well as winning the women's long drive on 7. Bruce Nelson won the men's long drive at the Country Club. At Bjornson Park, Josh Holm won the closest to the pin on the 2nd shot on hole 1. On hole four, Pat Breshnehan won the closest to the pin. On the seventh hole, Jim Retterath won the closest to the flag and on hole nine Kevin Jacobsen won the longest put contest.
Following the scramble a social was held at the VCTCC. Jim Retterath was honored for his contributions to athletics and the raffle prize of a gas grill donated by Jim Retterath was won by Todd Christiansen.
