Vikings Humbled by Minot State

By Ryan Cunningham

September 25

Valley City--What was a tightly contested game for three quarters turned into a rout in the fourth, as the Vikings took their third straight loss Saturday.

The Minot State Beavers used a punt return by Johnny Lester (Sr., Miami, FL), a short field drive, and an interception return by John Denne (So, St. Cloud, MN) to tack on 21 of 24 fourth-quarter points in a 34-3 win over the Vikings at Herb Parker Field.

The matchup was a tight, defensive struggle at 10-3 entering the fourth, but the Beavers went off for 24 points in a span of 10:47 to turn the game into a rout.

The lone Viking score came on a 14 play drive capped by a 28-yard field goal by Dillon Davis (Fr., Cocoa Beach, FL) late in the opening quarter.

The Vikings continued to struggle offensively, rushing for just 53 yards and being flagged 10 times in the game, mostly for line-of-scrimmage and false start penalties.

A key sequence game in the second quarter, when Derek Elliot (So., Valley City, ND) returned a kickoff to the Beaver 34. The Vikings picked up just one first down, and missed a 33-yard field goal try.

The Beavers took over at the 20, and faked a punt on fourth down, but were stopped at their own 29. However, the Vikings run four plays, failing to gain yardage.

Viking quarterback Trent Kosel (Sr., Edgeley, ND) finished 19-32 for 151 yards, throwing two interceptions. Minot State held the ball for 10 more minutes than the Vikings on the day.

The Vikings fall to 1-3, 0-2 in Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) play. They host Dickinson State Saturday afternoon at Lokken Field in Valley City.
