On a night when Calvin Kraft hit a keynote in his scoring career, the Viking lack of scoring was the difference.
Kraft (Sr., Casselton, ND) scored the 1000th point of his Viking career on his fifth three of the night, en route to a game-high 28 in a 64-60 loss to Minnesota State University-Moorhead Wednesday night in Valley City.
The Vikings got 12 points from D.J. Carroll (So., St. Paul, MN), all coming in the second half, with no other Viking contributing more than six. The Dragons were led by 16 from Alex Novak (So., Oxford, IA), one of three Dragons in double-figures.
Valley City State took a 25-15 lead midway through the first half, but the Dragons stifled the Vikings during a 20-2 run that lasted into the second half, taking a 35-27 lead.
MSU-Moorhead lead by as many as 12 at 54-42 with 3:28 left of the game. Kraft and Carroll lead a charge of shots that chopped into the lead.
Kraft nearly tied the game late on a three-point shot that drew a foul. The shot rolled well into the hole, but rimmed out. With the Vikings down four, Kraft hit two of the three foul shots.
The Vikings fouled for possession, but could not coax a miss from the Dragons, never getting a chance to tie or take the lead.
The Vikings drop to 0-4, and face Briercrest College of Caronport, SK, Friday and Saturday.
