By Ryan Cunningham NewsDakota.com
Valley City--The Viking baseball team split with Mayville State in a non-conference doubleheader in Sioux Falls, SD yesterday.
The Comets took advantage of a slow start by the Viking offense, taking a 5-1 win the opener. The Vikings rallied with three late runs to take a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
The Vikings actually outhit the Comets 5-3 in the opener, but a couple of errors allowed the Comets to take advantage, while the Vikings struggled to string offense together, receiving only two walks to go with their five hits.
Roberto Rodriguez (Sr., Chandler, AZ) took the loss, throwing four innings, allowing two earned runs. Cliff Vazquez (Jr., Tucson, AZ) had two hits in two trips and scored the lone Viking run.
The Vikings trailed 3-1 going to the bottom of the seventh before striking for a pair of runs in the inning to tie the game. They scratched out the game winner in the eighth for a 4-3 win.
Michael Danielson (So., New London, MN), the reigning Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) Player of the Week, smacked a two-run single to tie the game in the seventh. Dan Buehner (Fr., Blaine, MN) came up with a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth to win the game.
Colin Waldner (So., Altona, MB) worked the win with two innings of shutout ball. No Viking threw more than two innings in the nightcap.
The Vikings are now 11-8, and face Dickinson State in a four-game series in Dickinson this weekend.
